View Full Version : 1700+ is terrible
*edit* I did not mean to say that all 1700s are bad, just that mine is.
I have a DLT3C from week 19 of this year. I was under the impression that this would be a reasonably good overclocker. Guess what? It won't even POST at 2ghz. I'm kinda ****ed, but at least it wasn't that expensive. Is there a significant increase with burn in or a few day's use? My 2400+ would do 200x12 right outa the box so I'm a little confused.

Try ocing after you use it for a week. My Barton 2500+ needed a week of burn-in before it would go 200x11.

hm.. i think the good overclocking ones are 0310 week (whatever that means)
burning in will probably let u increase y a little bit.
but whats there to be confused about?
not all cpus are created equal
I just haven't heard of any recent 1700s that won't go over 2000mhz, thats all. I guess mine is the exception.

where did u get ur cpu from though?
your cpu might have been in store storage for months before being shipped out and sold to you.
r you sure you're not increasing memory timings by to much, could be the reason why its not posting as well

Are you upping the Vcore at all? It is fairly likely that the chip cannot do 2000 MHz with it's stock Vcore of 1.5 mV. Try going to 1.6 mV. Also remember that th NF7-S you have is known to have trouble posting at the 10X multiplier - if you are running 10 X 200 than try upping it to 11 X 200, or going down to 166X 12 and raising the Vcore to 1.75 for starters - then work your way to the lowest stable Vcore from there.
Also - what is the first part of the stepping on that processor - I.E. JIUHB. You may have gotten yourself a Thoroughbred "A" core that will have a lot of difficulty making it above 2200 MHz.
Yeah, it won't post at 2gig with even 1.95 Vcore.
I got the chip from someone who had recently purchased it but never put the ssytem together that it was to be used for. I'm fairly certain it wasn't lying around for a long time, but it might have been.
I'm in the comp lab typing a paper right now so I can't check the stepping, but when I'm done I'll run back to my room to.
As for it being an "A" core, I didn't know they were produced this far into 2003.
It's not the end of the world if it's a terrible chip. I alreay have one at 220x11.5. I'm just really suprised that it is so incredibly bad.

DLT3C B chips are excellent overclockers.
You got yourself a T-Bred A more than likely, there are chips a lot later than week 19. There's one in the AMD FAQ thread from week 24 (scroll down)
http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=190168
It was a big problem for a while, people were getting DLT3C left & right, and they were all A's. This is why we should always say DLT3C B (not A) when we talk about them. The (not A) part took care of a lot of headaches in the last few months when it finally dawned on people why they're getting 'only' 2 GHz. That's how well A's do: 2 GHz.
You're putting down B's when the starter of this thread:
http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=207088
has a 1700+ DLT3C B running at incredible 2588 MHz (!)

Yea, I would check the stepping again and see if you got an 'A' core. Almost all A's max out around 2 ghz.

You shouldn't feel too bad. AMD sold you a 1700+. They didn't sell you a chip that was "Supposed" to do 2500mhz. It's "supposed" to do stock speed.
However, that being said, not posting @ 2ghz @ 1.95v is terrible. What kind of PSU do you have? How about your ram?

MRip - look at the bright side, you can sell this processor on ebay as what it is, a 1700+ processor, regardless of overclockability. I am sure that someone will pay you $40+ for it, and you can then purchase another one, and see how *it* works out for you.
I am still curious about what the stepping is though - an "A", or a "B".

its an 'A' sure enough - AIRGA

I think James means its an 'A' sure enough - AIRG>A<
Almost all A/J****A-coded ones are A cores; those with A/J****B are B's. DLT3C just means that they run at 1.5v and a default 266 fsb with 256k cache, which says nothing about the core stepping.
Anyway, I have a theory about these A cores that were manufactured in March-2003ish... they have markings similar to to B cores with one notable exception, that is, the batch code denotes an A core. They also have a silvery (instead of pinkish) sheen and are slightly smaller than B cores (further proof of their A-coreness.) It seems that AMD had some leftover A-core wafers and decided to package them as low-speed CPUs. It is to me the only explanation for an A-core CPU being manufactured in March 2003.
Another note - these late CPUs aren't from the best of the A core wafers; being AIRGA they tend to top out around 1.7-1.8GHz. I can almost guarantee you that your CPU is an AIRGA.
Edit - I suppose I guessed correctly. Only read the first post.

guess u could always ebay it, then buy another one while CLOSELY inspecting the steppings, watch out for jixib's, they blow
That would explain it. Off to ebay it goes! Thanks guys. For some reason I just didn't think I would get an "A" core if I got a brand new chip.

1.95v - exactly how much voltage my AIUGA 1800+ needed to run at 2GHz fully stable. The newer AIRGA 1700+ in my other system is **** poor- needs 1.9v to run at 1.73GHz.
Contrast that with my killed-by-a-dying-motherboard JIUHB 1700+ that could run at 2.45GHz with 1.95v...
wtf? swear word filter? swear words used effectively add to the mood! looney tunes forum
Swear words effectively add names to the list of people banned from our forums, as well.

Hi,
If I EVER see you bypass the swear filter again like that, for any reason, at any time, you'll be getting a vacation to think about doing it.
Got it?? I hope so....

Thank you.

he thinks I was talking to him using cussing words.. oh no.. is that why you are so excited to know? My last reply wasn't for you. I wasn't even talking to you. I was trying to help the other guy.
and... as for the overclocking skills, with a descent jiuhb dlt3c xpmw 0310 chip, with a nice supercooling, this is what i get. Some people(you know who) underestimate me.. Having few orange stars and acting like a noob doesn't mean that person really is a noob... could be a deadly [h]ardcore overclocker ya know... When I throw some oc numbers, I don't make lies.. but real oc'ing accomplishments.. the oc to 4Ghz is the one with bull... (you know who).

yea[h] we gat[h]ered as much. What cooling are you using to get a T-Bred to 2.8 since 2.5 is achievable but rare and anything above requires extraordinary cooling.

So tell us about the supercooling. And I'm sure you have a pic or two of the setup.

dood, I said [h] thing coz mongoled flamed at me calling me "prick". That is why. you seem to get offended easily even though I wasn't talking about you.
mine is done with the phase-change cooling, no pelt.
If mongoled didnt' call me "prick", I wouldnt' have used the " [ ", " ] ", and " h ". There are ways question me/ judge me a little nicer than saying "prick" at me.

i don't got pics to show coz i don't have digital camera. I don't have money for the camera. :(
besides... almost nobody is going to manage and normally run it at 2.8ghz even if you manage DIY supercooling.. The most you gonna suffer from is the condensation and that is why most others(except top dog oc'ers from xtreme, OCcentral, & hardforum) don't use it, except... me. :p
hmm weird, someone must've dropped yours on the floor... :p
I have the same week running at 2500mhz @ 1.85v.

WOW! :)
Got any benches? ;)
I would love to see what the Sandra PR/benches look like compared to some others! :)
Which motherboard are you using?

Or, in some cases (me), luck.
