Do you have any other cooling than the standard heatsink+fan? If not, you might want to get another CPU cooler, if you want to overclock your new CPU.

The problem here seems to be your 100Mhz RAM, but some are lucky, and can get some pretty high FSB's with it. You should get 133MHz RAM though, it'll let you overclock more.

When you want to overclock, go to the bios, and set the FSB to something more than the default 100. If you set it to 110, your processor will do 110*7 = 770 MHz. If you set it to 133, your processor will do 133*7 = 933MHz. I don't think you can set it to 133 right away, with that RAM and crappy cooling.

Oh yeah, when you are in the BIOS, don't forget to set your ram to CAS 3-3-3, and crank up the CPU-voltage a bit, maybe to 1.70 or 1.75 for starters.

Hope this helps, but you are always welcome to ask again!

Hi Alan thanks for your help just to clear a few things i do have a normal fan surposed to go upto 800 mhz but am ordering a better one though here . sorry to seem thick but does that mean because i have pc 100 mem i cant clock very high ?? if so do you know what the top speed i can clock to with pc 100 mem ?

what does this mean and do please alan =
(your ram to CAS 3-3-3,)

also why put cpu voltage higher ?? wont it damage cpu ?

sorry im asking dumb questions

Thanks Craig

Hi Craig!

There are no dumb questions in here - only dumb answers! :)

Let's deal with the RAM questions first. Your FSB is now at 100MHz, and so is your RAM. If you push the FSB higher, your RAM will follow, and since it's "only" 100MHz RAM that could be a problem. I can't tell you exactly how high it will allow you to go, you have to test that yourself. sorry. If you want to be sure, get some RAM that can handle 133MHz, that should give you some more headroom.

As for the CAS, your RAM can go at CAS2 or CAS3. CAS3 is a bit slower, but it handles overclocking better, and thats why you might want to go with CAS3 for starters. You can find the CAS settings in the BIOS as well, just go huntin' for them... :)

You want to increase CPU voltage, because it will help you when overclocking. A few notches won't damage the CPU I guess, or at least not noticeable over a longer period of time. Almost all overclockers increase the CPU voltage, to get higher speeds, I wouldn't worry too much about that if I were you.

Hope this clears things up a bit for you. Just remember:

Hi Allan

Thanks very much you have given me a brillant crash course in oc and i have got my cpu from 700 to 933 np at all havnt tryed any higher as my new alfa fan arives today so im waiting till i install that later then i will see if i can go any higher propley will stay around the 950 mark as im sure this will be fast enough for now lol and run stable for me

Thanks again aln Craig

ps what speed do you keep ur p3 700 oc too ??

I'm glad to have helped you Craig! Others helped me in here, when I was new to overclocking, so it's nice to be able to help now. That's what we're here for! :)

When I just use Windows, Seti, Internet, I have my P3-700 running 980MHz, but when playing 3Dgames, I go to 945MHz, just to avoid any crashes.

I think I'll try the Globalwin FOP-38 soon, and see if it rocks.

Have fun with your overclocked monster! :)
