Well I bought an AMD XP 3000+ cpu (2.1ghz), installed it into my system, and the computer is reporting it as running at 1050 mhz, half of what it is supposed to be running at. Any idea why?

System specs are:
Asus A7N8X Delux Mobo
1024 mb Corsair 3200 ram
2 120 gb 8 mb cache hdds
GeForce FX 5900 Ultra
AMD Athalon 3000+
Onboard sound, ethernet.

All help is much appreciated :)

It's because your Front Side Bus is running at 100 instead of 200. Check if you need to set any jumpers and ensure that your BIOS settings are correct.

It's no big deal. Lots of motherboards first time boot up at 100FS default. Actually most boards I have are like this. Which will make the processors' speed slower than rated. All you need to do is to change the FSB in BIOS to what it should be. And don't forget to save it by pressing F10.

They are right, set the FSB to 200, and make sure the memory is also 200, this will give you optimal performance.

Default FSB on the 3000+ is 166...

Im pretty sure the bartons over 3000 come at 200 or was that just the 3200?

The 3000+ comes in two flavors (166 and 200 MHz FSB as seen here: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=3000%2B). Most likely you've got the 200MHz FSB version and the solution will be what everyone above has suggested.

is your board capable of using the 200FSB chips? the a7n8x has always been a pain as far FSB goes. my neighbor had one and it would fight you when you got around 180's.

i'm saying this because defaulting to 100 is like a limp mode for the computer. when something goes wrong it cuts the power so to speak. so if it's constantly doing this then something is wrong. try running at 133 and if that goes try 166.

Those 2 threads are about posting in the right section. It isnt that you are gonna be in trouble for misplacing a thread, it happens to everyone. Ive misplaced a few threads during my time here, ive seen even some seniors accidently misplace threads. But the real issue here is not a once in a blue moon misplaced thread, its closer to 10-20 a day. And that is ALOT of work for the moderators.

That is pretty interesting! I never knew that the 3000+ came in 400fsb. Since you said that your CPU was a 2.1Ghz and not a 2.17, that means you probably have a 200 (400 DDR) fsb CPU as shown in the link to newegg. 2.1Ghz is 400 and 2.17 is the 333.

Most likely your FSB on the motherboard is set at 133Mhz, you can go into the Bios and set that up to 166Mhz and see what that does, and if it is still low, go ahead and set it at 200Mhz.

What emericanchaos said is some cause for concern becuase that could be what the problem is here. Currently I am checking to see if there are any BIOS updates available for that motherboard that allow it to hit 200 fsb.
ok im back.

FSB 400 Support
Starting from PCB version 2.0, The A7N8X motherboard supports Front Side Bus
(FSB) 400. The PCB (Printed Circuit Board) version is located beside the
motherboard name printed on the motherboard. PCB 2.0 BIOS version or later are not compatible with PCB 1.06 or earlier BIOS versions.

Sorry. Unfortunatly that means that you do not have a version 2.0 motherboard. The version 2.0 does support the higher FSB. Unfortunatly, the version 1.06, which you might have, cannot support 200 (400) fsb.
