hey yall

I got my hands on a ati 9600 non. I tried to install it and had problems.

My system has the 5200 in my sig. I uninstalled all the drivers for it and leadtek software also.

When I installed my ati, the instructions said to use the standard vga drivers in order to install the catalyst drivers, but when I try to install standard vga drivers, they cannot be found and only a list of ati cards are shown.

I install the ati driver found in windoze and i get the black no-post of death.

I fought with this thing for 4 hours before i got fed up and took the card back for a refund.

I am now looking into getting a 5900 with drivers i know will work.

Has anyone had this problem while installing ati cards? I want to get the best card out right now that could be had for around $200. If I could get some insight in what i may have done wrong, I am willing to give ati another shot b4 i go with nvidia.

it sounds like the old nv drivers werent completely gone. you need to use a utility like det destroyer i believe. even though you uninstall it still leaves parts of the driver in the system. a format reinstall would hav solved your problems most likely.

You need to make sure all the nvidia drivers are gone. When windows detects the new card, click cancel, that will install the standard vga drivers. Now run the catalayst .exe installer.

For the money of a 5900 you could get the 9500 or 9700, but if you want to spend an extra 70 or so you can get a 9800pro. I wouldnt buy nvidia right now because of their FX line. I'am very dissapointed in nvida right now.

yea well, I don't like it much either, but it shouldn't be much of a problem, specially when upgrading graphics cards, it is really recommended to do a clean install anyway
