i got my mag 3 today and was trying to put on the barbs i got. the male one fits in nicely, but the female one won't go on more than 1-1.5 turns. i got the barbs from usplastic and got the #62229 here (http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=USPlastic&category%5Fname=&product%5Fid=Polypropylene+Female+Adapters) female barb. its the 1/2" NPT like its supposed to be, because the 1/2" male NPT barb that i got fits in it perfectly. the top of the output on the pump is a little ragged (like its not a perfect thread, a little rough looking right at the top), but im pretty sure i'm not cross threading it. i just want to know if other people have had similar problems and what i can do about it.

I have a mag 5 which is basically the exact same thing and basically the exact same thing happens to me. I put some teflon tape that I think is about 3/8" in width or maybe 1/4" and after using a wrench I ended up with 2 threads of the teflon tape leftover, after all of the turning with the wrench. And I was only able to get it on myself about 2 full turns if that much.

alright thanks. if im gonna be using a wrench to tighten it more, should i be worried about cracking the output thing? should the input barb be tighter, i can almost get it all the way in without too much effort (also i know about the cracking input thing). i realise teflon tape will make it tighter, but im just curious why the output is so much tighter than the input.

NO WRENCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the threaded barb on the Mag3 can easily break... Just use some teflon tape to prevent leak...

I just got my mag3 today and my female fitting has trouble screwing in but Im going to put teflon tape on it and HAND tighten it as much as I can and see if that will work...

As long as you have some tef tape on the threads it shouldnt leak even if its not tightened all the way

I am using a brass outlet fip and I have had no cracking problems and also you only want to put the inlet mip about 1/4-1/2 a turn further after you tighten it as far as you can with your hands. And many people put a clamp on the plastic part of the inlet to help against the cracking of the inlet though you don't have to worry as much with poly barbs.
My outlet did leak no matter what even with a good amount of teflon tape on the outlet so I had to use a wrench.

same here on my mag 2, on the inlet, hand tight, outlet i had to use a wrench (or something like one :D) to get it tight or it would leak, just go slow , about 2 turns at a time and check it, but i got mine down to where there only like 4 threads left showing on the output housing.

Hows the sound on your Mag pump? I have a Mag5 and a Mag3. I'm currently using the Mag3 and wish it were quieter. It is the loudest thing in my case with my fans all turned down as low as they'll go.

Damnnnn the only reason I got this pump was because i was expecting it to be quieter than my current L30.... Well well see how it turns out.. Im about 30 minutes from putting it all together :D

Make sure you get all the air bubbles out of your pump, and mount it on some foam or something...I have mine on three layers of cut up mousepad, and I can't hear it even if I turn everything off.

I can hold mine suspended in air and still hear it. My Mag5 sounded the same.
