A friend recently posted pics of my computer workspace at work. I had never really stepped back and looked at it until I viewed the pics on the bulletin board at work!

I'm guessing that mine is not the most cramped space out there. I actually have a great-fluid like dynamic to the layout that allows me to game, monitor the servers, talk to friends with IM, watch movies and browse the forums all at once.

Post pics of what your area looks like.

Here's mine:

This is one of those threads that keeps popping up every now and then. Many came before, and many will follow. Environments and the computers that occupy will change, but the faces of those who use them will most likely stay the same.

good thing i cleaned up today ;)

Steve978, nice lan setup. That's the caliber of setup that I'm working on. We have 10 gaming rigs and 2 servers now. After I move whichever room is the biggest in the new house will be setup as the lan area.

It's actually the Canon S520.

and yes, my temps are high (58°C CPU right now), but it doesn't make any difference... The cubbyhole has no back and my computer doesn't have any side fans or blowholes anyways...

The computer's a 386 that I picked up at Goodwill a few years ago. Windows 3.1 customized to how I like it :D The bays are empty since the 3-1/4" drive is non fuctioning, and I took the 5-1/4" out and put it in my tower (actually, the one currently in my tower is from a friend, the original drive was too slim too look good and is on the printer in my pic :D)

The monitor on top of it goes with my 8086 (in my closet ATM since it's too wide to fit in the desk)

The ever changing case mod! :) Install a few fan filters to help with the dust problem, be sure to change them after a while, and it's set! That would be cool to bring to a LAN party

I want to get a SN45G, which I will refrain from writing on! I hope to get it as soon as I can because my current system isnt...well....not cutting it to say the least.

Ill post picks of my desk when I get my hands on a Digital Camera and when I get my new system...
Sn45G, Barton 3000 or 2500, 512MB Corsair XMS, R9800Pro, 40Gig WDSE, 52x24x52 CDRW, and to finish it off a Benq Flat screen :) .

yea, that's my little corner of my dorm room. Lucky me my estate is fridge- and microwave-adjacent. :D Well, they ARE mine, anyhow, hehe. Anyway, I have no idea why I brought my speakers up. I don't use them except when there's something cool I want to share with my roommates (video or flash somethingorother)....otherwise I use my headphones (Plantronics DSP-500, excellent sound and they're a headset to boot, USB tho, so if I want to switch to speakers I have to close whatever the sound is coming out of and reopen it after I unplug my headphones) The fridge is open because I'm defrosting it.....christmas break starts (for me) on thursday at 10.....some of my friends are heading home tomorrow...they finished finals today....little buggers.

If you want to see my rig....er.....look behind the ladder in the bottom left....see that blue light? yea, my rig....lol. And as for the pop cans......they're worth $0.10 each, so forget tossing them, lol. Most of them I smuggled across the border from minnesota, lol.

And a handy tip for those who write stuff down a lot....GET A DILBERT CALENDER!!! It's like having a comic strip and a note pad rolled into one! I usually pile them up before I toss them (too lazy to toss them when I tear them off) so if I ever need to write something down I have a stack of paper sitting right next to me, hehe.

The 2x4 construction for the bed/workspace is priceless! :)

DaveSauce
12-16-03, 07:49 PM
actually, it's 4x4 and 2x6 used to hold it all up....

we have 3 people in the room. THe way things were originally set up, 2 of the beds were bunked and one bed was next to them...as you can imagine, not very much room. So we decided to put all 3 beds up on a loft, and each of us have our desk below our bed. This makes a TON of space....in fact, we have a fairly large area with nothing in it.

it's not uncommon here....everyone does it. I'm glad they allow us to do it, or else we'd have absolutely no space in our room.

well, off to study....maybe....i got a final at 7:45 tomorrow morning...and I am totally unprepared....yuck.

I believe you, I was just kidding around man. I was more joking about the ghetto-ness of the ones that I assume you use for your PC, since they are on either side of the monitor. I bet they sound better than my creative speakers though.

With best of wishes,
Tray

dunno but i've had a similar configuration for quite a while now.

i was sick of having my full system laid out in my sig, but it may be going back to that soon if i get my A64 system. that way people who have questions about newer parts like the A64 would know i had one and could ask me for help. My current setup is pretty standard stuff so i don't feel i need to lay it all out.

Yep, my parents bought it two years ago. Compaq, flat panel too. It's the only desktop at my house that works right now. My computer is to the left, I'm waiting until the 64 bit prices come down before I buy. The black monitor on the end is where my dad hooks his laptop up at. And the other small laptop between my computer and the compaq is a PII 333 Mhz with a busted screen that just crunches SETI.

Sorry about the size. I don't have photo editing software on this computer and Paint doesn't work :(

BTW, I have P1115. Basically same problems as you. I got it used for $50 from my dad. He gave extra cartridges as well so the price wasn't bad. It always worked well for him, but he used it daily. I only use it about once a month.

Also, that's not our house on the lappy's wallpaper, just a house my dad appraised.

Sphere, in my opinion, was a very good book. The movie may have sucked, but that almost always happens when they base a movie on a book. I read Sphere about 5 or 6 years ago, and it made the 90 minute study halls just fly by.

So yeah, go ahead and read it. It's better than the movie :D

That's a proper Dual Shock 2 on the desk, connected by a usb adaptor, I think they're the best pad ever so this was really exciting to me.

The Cheap and cheerful 19" Crt was set up as a 2nd display for my main box, switching to the second box via my KVM switch but I wasn't using the 2nd display at all as the image quality is so crappy compared to the lcd, so now it's exclusively for my 2nd box which is pretty much just sitting folding all the time.

During term time I live on campus, this is my desk there:

This is my room at Uni: the only two fully operational PCs are the laptop and the dually. The Duron 700 is in a cardboard box behind the monitors and refuses to boot  and I cant use the K6-2 cos I need an AT keyboard and serial port mouse for it. Don't know why I got it in the first place. Under one of my speakers is my hub, and just out of view is my printer.

Well Spotted, it was originally an advent p2 350, it belonged to my grandad, who upgraded it to a 500 mhz p3 and then passed it down to me when he bought a new system. Since then I've replaced pretty much everything but the mobo and cpu It was the first PC that was actually exclusively mine :)

OMG!...I have done that a few times myself....zip tied it all together only to undo it all again as I need to change something. Major pain in the keister. This time I am going to use dryer duct, cut a slit lengthwise down and all my cables will fit inside nicely. This way I can get at them easilly if need be.
My roomie has a ingenius contraption he built into his desk. He basically made(thing that catches leaves on side of house...Homer did not finish his phonics course:p ) and ran that on the under side of his desk and nary a wire can be seen.

AdvanS13, If I were you,
I would move the desk Facing the window
the bed? in the spot your Chair is in in the first Pic, and the TV on the Oposite side of the room.

its always nice to look out the window while you are working on the computer, plus if you are facing the window you can't get glare on your screen from it.

side note,

everyone keeps there desks so clean, I have no Idea how,
between floppies, CD's extra hardware, beer bottles, and books, you can barely see my wooden desk, and I clean it off regularly

SF101
02-01-04, 07:29 PM
my desk is not always clean but the trick is have a garbage can beside you somewhere and always take your dishes out lol
even if they are stacked up in a sink keep em off the desk and you should be good heheh..

i used to have like 400cans stacked around here lol

then i was like hey sis want some extra $?
so on that basis remeber famly members can be usefull..

its not hard. just like sf101 said keep a trash can nearby and try to take cups and stuff back to the kitchen when you are done with them. i keep my desk fairly clean all the time due to these measures. right now i've got a plate from tonights dinner and a glass of bottled water with a few dvdrs laying around but thats about it.

Re Speakers, 4 SATELITES + 1 SUBWOOFER:
For the price I love them! Some of my friends are audio philes and they enjoy the sound that comes out of them as well. I have read good reviews on them, that is why i bought em.
I think they are a little dated now and you may find Altic Lansing has newer models at about the same price. If you are looking for surround sound for your games at around $50 than these will do the trick.
Now if you want the other side of the Coin, ask ONI. I know he does not like these speakers.

notice the previously un-posted chair mod. through pure luc...skill the sound is perfectly balanced front/rear when i'm sitting in my normal position for gaming.

btw. these pics were taken using one of those little keychain cameras you see on late nite tv. this is the high quality setting (not resized at all, this is how it comes off of the camera), the low is unusable, i cant recommend one of this things. i'm returning mine today.

Nope, I didn't care much for them. I mean, they were alright for the price (paid $50 for mine. Two sats + 1 sub), but there are better sets out there for the same amount of money, give or take.

I pro'lly would've been happier if I had just saved and bought a REALLY good set.

I use headphones right now, anyways. I gave those speakers to my dad.

They are Eltax, 2x6.5 Inch in each of the front speakers. And 1X5.5 Inch in the back ones. And 2x5.5 Inch in the Center speaker. They are only 100W in the front and 80W in the back. I could not get anything Bigger, as the guy under me is still complaining when i watch a DVD.:D The Sub is a 10 Inch, and sits right above this TV.
When he used to play his muisc really loud, I play a game of UT2003 using the HT speakers... Hehehe... Open up with the chain gun and the floor starts to vibrate...
