View Full Version : Not enough power, I think

I had an earlier post that I believed that my new Cel II 566 FC was a faulty chip.
I kept getting blue screen errors in Windows, on start up and on most all apps. I ran system monitor to show the CPU usage with the 566 was mostly 100% then lock ups & errors. When I put my Cel 300a back in it was flawless. Hardly 50% CPU usage when multitasking. So what it the difference between the 2 chips ?
I guess the bad CPU theory is out. I have my 300a back in now. One thing my tech has a concern about was that with all the hardware on my system, I have only a 250 w power supply.I don't have a 300 or higher to try out. I'm going to get a 300 or 450 w in a few days. I think I need more juice. Could this be giving me those nasty "fatal exception OE error" messages ? It does make sense though when I think about it. What does the 566 do that the 300a dosn't?
Needs a bit more juice.?
Have any thoughts ?

In a way your right but it's not the psu it your M/B that does not support it sorry to be the berror of bad news, check it here FAQ. (http://www.abit-usa.com/english/faq/motherboards/bh6.htm) Don't know if there is a fix but i'll look and let you know if I find one just a thought try uping voltage might help. Good luck

Thanks for your reply warmachine.
I already have the SS bios. I thought that
was the fix. The description of the bios says it will handle the celumines.
another suggestion was to try
"clean power" from another location in the house, If that dosn't work, a 300 w power supply & we'll see.

try this unplug extra fans both cd's and 2'nd HD see if it wil run stable. If that does not work I would test CPU in a friends system. If you have a generic PSU I would check the voltages on it. I think that board monitors them in bios check with everything pluged in and 300a and then with 566 se if you get a drop. well be watching

This will not ussually make a differance because the CPU uses the 3.3V and 5V rails. HDs and fans and CD-ROMs primarily use the seperate 12V rail.

Is the PSU AMD approved? This will make the biggest difference in stability (Even on Intel systems). The AMD approved PSUs allot more current to the low voltage rails.

Will check & get back to you Jeff.

This all sound familiar...

I recently upgrading from a 300A celeron to a 600 cCO celeron II (now at 926) on my ASUS P2B.

I also have a 250 watt power supply. The blue screens plagued me as well. After seeing the blue screen several times, I realized the error was with the vxd file for my soundcard.

After running Driver Detective v2.0, I downloaded/installed an updated file.

Now I'm at the 926 I mentioned earlier. I'll try to go faster when I have better cooling. This is just the retail box fan.

That was it exactly, thanks to you all.
I'm zipping along at 707 now. Will try 850 later.

Hey There, I have an idea, might sound a little crazy, but as everyone knows the new celeron II's need actually LESS power (voltage) than the older celeron I's. Try to down the voltage to 1.65, thats the default for Cely II's. You might be burnin up the processor! Hope it helps:)
