I just purchased a 600 mhz Pentium III CPU from an online distributor. It was represented as a Katmai version (512 KB 1/2 FSB L2 cache) and its stepping code is SL3K9. I've been unable to locate this code at Intel's site or anywhere else. Does anyone know what CPU this represents? My main problem is that it will not post on my ASUS P2B-LS rev 1.02 mobo with BIOS revision 1012, although it should by all rights do so. The company claims that it tests out perfectly AOK in their machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm. I can't find your CPU's S-Spec in OCer's.com's CPU Database, either. Just a hunch that may not be helpful, are you sure you have a Katmai? Please to forgive this question, if necessary!

Actually I'm not sure it's a Katmai. I couldn't find the stepping code anywhere which is what led me to believe it may be something else. I'd just like to find out exactly what type of chip the stepping SL3K9 is. I suspect I may have been cheated but I just want to verify that before I take any aggressive action. I truly appreciate your helping me out. If you've can tell me anything further I would be grateful. Thanks again man.

You could download "sisoft sandra" which is an information & benchmarking suite, and best of all it's free, once installed it will tell yoou the cpu, stepping, revision, and even the rated voltage..BTW the katmai cpu's have cache chips on the pcb,and the coppermines do not, and if this vendor sold you the katmai because of the extra cache...then you got burnt because a coppermine with 256k will run circles around a katmai at a givin speed even though it has half the cache, it runs at processor speed, unlike the katmai which has half speed cache

If it says 512K in the processor numbers, it has to be a Katmai- the Coppermines are all 256KB cache. Also it will say 2v for a Katmai.
