Hey guy's(or gals),
My friend just told me he want's me to build him a "decked out" system around january so i have until then to plan for it!! Muwahaha, he said he even want's water cooling because i will be OC'n it for him, so he dont have to spend 400 dollar on a cpu i can do speeds with an 80 dollar one :D I've already decided a few things.. figured i'd passem by here and see what you all think.
Now this is gonna be geard towards gamming. so obviously i'm going AMD, since that's what he likes too!
Budget - $2,000 including Tower and Contents and Monitor
anyway here's what i got so far:
system:
Case - Lian Li PC75 Silver w/ window
Mobo - Abit IC7-G Max 2
RAM - Corsair PC4000 twinpack (2x512) 1GB PC3500
CPU - P4 2.4C with HT
HD - WD 120GB 7200rpm SATA
Video - ATI 9800 PRO 128 MB
PSU - Antec True 550W
CD/RW- LG 52/24/52X CDRW
Monitor - NEC 19" superbright Dimontron FLAT CRT
Watercolling:
Pump - Mag 3
Tubing - 1/2ID 5/8OD CF60 :D
Block - Dtek WW
HC - DD HC 7x6
What you guy's think, i'm definatly open to suggestions.

Only thing I saw you list that I would question is the ram. Why skimp and only get 512mb? Go for the Gig!

I may, but probably only if i can find a strip with 1GB on it, simply because i have my thereory behind memory, access across two strips will take longer than on 1, soo.. let me see if i can find it, so far i'm only up to like $595.00 anyway :D
I just dropped the cash down on an BBATI 9800 Pro... since it *is* in his budget... THIS CARD RULES!
or else get a 9700 pro and overclock it...

funny you said that, i was just researching some debate over NV or ATI, I think i will be going ATI even though he and i both have been long NV fans.

A more reliable pump like a Ehiem 1250. And a Heatercore or Rad.
Throw in a DVD-ROM too for some extra Optiacal drivage for Disk to disk burning.

Nope, you can get dual channels out of two sticks of RAM. This is faster than a single stick...
Also, PC4000 memory isn't designed for AMD systems, which do better with lower FSB and tight memory timings, it's designed for Intel rigs which like high FSB and loose timings.
I recommend a 1GB Mushkin PC3500 Black Level II Dual Pack for your friend's computer. That's about the best you will be able to do for AMD rigs. You will get some really tight timings and 220+MHz on the FSB.

thanks for the tip, may have to change that, i just thought the faster capability of the ram the better.

The BUDGET PRICE IS FOR TOWER & CONTENTS AND MONITOR, no perefierals (sp?) or any thing besides tower and monitor, and BTW the NF7-s has the 5.1 Dolby Nvidia Soundstorm Built in:D

Anyone recommend any spacious case that would be good for WC and already have windows, as i might be able to do a little moding, he's the type though that wont want me to CUT up anything he just dropped a bill for... too much anyway :D

ttt
I would suggest a Radeon 9800 XT instead of the pro, since it performs and OCs a little better to my knowledge. Also, I believe some brands bundle a voucher for HL2.
For casing, nothing can match the style of Lian-Li's, and they have some pretty big models. But you pay a lot for good quality.

Only the RETAIL versions come with the HL2 Cert.
and yes, go for the 9800XT.
Also, for that money, get him a DVD-RW, The Plextor PX-708A (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=PX%2D708A) is IMHO the best one out there, and it is within his budjet.
I would also reccomend you get him 2 of those Hard Drives and RAID them. that would be Killer. :santa:

Sometimes I'll go to ZipZoomfly and be like "I have $2,500, what can I get?" It's almost as fun as actually spending it! :)

on the proc though.. tbred B or Barton ( i'm thinking tbred as the new bartons will be locked) tbreds i can still find easy!

Why not P4 2.4C or whatever clocks the highest, if he's dropping $2,000? A 2.4C is only like $100 more, and should clock to 3.3-3.5 on water.

Have you considered the FX-51/FX-53?

I say drop the opticals you listed and buy a DVD burner. there under 100 now and they'll burn CD's and do HD (high density) burns on CD's (about 1.5gb), and of course DVD's. Also go for one raptor for OS and a 120gb IDE for storage.
You have some extra cash in your budget...I'd go with a 2.6C honestly, it would cost 100 more.
Also go for an ehiem....maybe it's just me but I'd feel a lot more comfortable giving it to a friend who's gonna be at the mercy of YOUR parts and YOUR OC.
The parts added/subsittuted would be 250 MAX...also what about peripherals? does he already have a good reciever/stereo setup? If not he NEEDS!!!! klipsch 4.1/5.1's or Z680's
Just let us know so this machine can be all it can be :)

That's a pretty sweet setup you got going there!
Man I could sure use that 200GB hard drive ... That's like 1/5 of a tetrabyte ... lol
- edit -
If you're looking for a flat CRT, check out those ViewSonics! My sis has a 19" PF790, and so does my buddy Matt. They are the _clearest_ CRTs I've ever seen.

I have considered the fx 51/ and such.. but without really true 64bit OS/Gamming environment... I think this would be more hassle for him and a big fat waist of mula.
ON the suggestions for Intel.. :-/ , i dont know..
i have had thoughts of tht be'n the choice for my next rig.. but i'm a long time AMD fan since the k62-500 , so we'll see.. and i'm not looking for every single MHZ i can OC it just for that, it's gonna be his Gaming rig.. so you see.
And yes he does need perifials.. but he told me that the budget he quoted would not inlude that. he would get those extra on top..
(back of head thinking... intel.. hmmmmm. someone try to talk me into it) really though.. it would be like going back to NOOB for me because i havent had any intels or used them since like.. welll the orinal pentium sieries.. i had a celly 433 gateway once... but well that's enough said for that system :-/

Looks pretty good, but for $2000 you can probably get a much more functional PC even if it is just for gaming. Definitly get a DVD+-RW, that's a must, at least for me it is. And if he plans on doing anything other than gaming, say video encoding or just plan doing a lot of things at once, then I'd go with intel. My P4 beats the crap out of my AMD when it comes to multi tasking but then again you can't compare a 2800+ to a 3.06ghz. But when it comes to game they're about even, except for the price ;)
Hmm what's next, as far as speakers go I don't have a clue other than those THX cert. Logitecs. And Lastly, I wouldn't mind having either a WD raptor and a 120GB IDE or even better, a RAID 0 WD raptor setup with 120GB IDE as storage. Well that's just my opinion. I guess I still have to look for some customers of my own. sigh :'(

Okay i'm now considering going with the 2.4C... but since i'm an AMD fanboy,.. what board would be a good OC'er with this chip? and also i'm guessing faster ram would be in order for som insane FSB's..
and i will be killing the CDRW/DVDROM ideah and going with DVDRW

a nice mobo to o\c that P4 2.4C would be something like an Abit IC7 or go for the Max3
