View Full Version : PIII 800 EB too hot?

I just installed a new PIII 800 EB fc-pga on a new Asus Clus2-C. According to the MB it it sits idle at 49-50*C, is this normal? What is the normal safe temp range for one of these?I have a slot 1 PIII 700@933@1.65v with a lapped GORB that rarely comes close to these temps after a few hours of Q3.
I know he is getting good heat transfer between the cpu and HS/F because it is pretty warm to the touch. Should we consider replacing it with a new HS/F? (an Alpha maybe?) What are your opinions? It's a beautiful chip and fast as lightning I'd hate to see it burn out on him (I also don't wanna hear him Bitch and Moan while he waits for Intel to send a new one =])
As usual, any help is greatly appreciated and welcome.

That's HOT! Are you using some type of thermal compound? If not you need some. If you are is it a very thin layer? What Vcore are you running?
Then again, Asus can't seem to design a board that measures temperature worth a damn.

We are just using the thermal paste that came on the HS. The v-core is 1.7v (that's as low as the board would go, at least in jumperfree mode, I'm not sure if there is a jumper for setting the cpu voltage).
I guess I'll look for a thermometer with a probe to test it accurately and a better heat sink for it. I know Alphas are good but he isn't interested in overclocking, what else might be a good HS/F combo to look into?
It just seems a little odd that it would get that hot running idle with the retail HS/F, sure it's not the best for cooling, but I would think Intel would include something that is at least adequate.Anyone else have this problem with this board? Is it just a crappy thermal sensor on the board?
Thanks again,

Maybe the HSF is not seated properly. You might look into the Global Win heat sinks they are very close to the Alphas but a lot less expensive

I'm having a similar problem with a PIII 600EB and an ASUS P3V4X. The cpu temperature reads 75 C!!! and climbs to over 110 C when I turn the bus up to 133 Mhz where it's supposed to be. Is this just an insane temp reader in the mobo or is my machine about to explode?
You know I have a similar problem but mine is not OC'ed my dual 550's run @ about 42 - 47 deg C sometmes they will hit over 50-52 Deg C And I am using Globalwin dual Fan HSF combination

Burly, are yours coppermines too? and what voltage are they set at? What mainboard are you using? Just curious to see if what similarities, if any, there are between the systems that we're all having trouble with. How does your system work despite the excessive heat readings?
I checked out www.Cusl2.com and it seems that alot of people are having the same problem with this particular MB. Someone else on this thread said Asus has trouble getting their thermal probes right so it's possible it's the boards (i'm hopin'). In the meantime I told my friend not to use his computer too much and check his temp often, like I said, I don't want him burnin' his new chip out. If he does I gonna have to be the one that replaces it for him. (not somethin' I have any desire or need to do =]).

**** man i have a p3 800eb aswell and its running hotter than me running on a hot day cpu temp is 127f
My motherboard is a supermicro p6dbe Rev 2.X cpus are katami core 550's.
I just bought an 866EB and a cusl2-c board. With the retail fan the bios reported the temp at 40-41C. With their Asus Probe in Win it says the idle temp was 33C.
My temps seem a little more reasonable, though rather high for an unoverclocked system in a case with 3 fans. Maybe the error varies from board to board?
Just in case, I'm adding an alpha and 2 extra case fans so I can overclock.

Decided not to chance anything, he's gonna get a new HS/F (tryin to talk him into an Alpha) and a digital thermometer w/probe.
Thanx for the input,

I'm running an 800eb at 900mhz and my temp at idle is about 85F and at a load (SETI) it goes to about 110-115F. I'm runnig a 150mhz FSB and an ABIT SA6R MOBO. I also have the core set to 1.8 or 1.9 (I can't remember offhand) and NO problems at all. Sounds to me like you might just have a bad temp. sensor on your Asus mobo.
Forgot to add that I'm running the stock HS/F and it's in a full tower case with the side off. Also, I keep my room temp around 60 degrees.
