help locating old drivers.....

I have a pretty old IBM server model # 310. I got it off ebay sometime ago for 6 dollars. Even if i do not get it to work its no big deal because it only costed me $20 shipped. Anyways, i was thinking of seting it up as a firewall for my small home network. I tried to eject the CD-ROM , the light blinks, it makes the usual sound but it does not eject. I tried booting it up with a win95, win98, winME boot disk but it says error cd-rom driver not found. Now, these boot disks work fine so whats the problem?? I tried swapping cd roms but the cables the IBM is using are so outdated and do not even have the same ends . They have longer ends and more "pins"

Hmm.. could it be that the server uses scsi instead of ide??
Try booting with a linux boot disk and install a linux firewall....

Yeah sounds like SCSI... if its as old as you think it may not even support booting from CD

yes it is scsi . I t was made around 1995-96.

I was just thinking, maybe you have a $20 server :) Was it even known to be functional?

ejecting the CD should not require drivers. Can you swap the CD drive out into another box or try putting another CD-ROM into the server. Can you open the drive using the pin trick?

edit: sorry didn't spot that you's already tried swapping the CD-Roms, sounds like the gearing inside the drive has slipped/snapped

The onboard SCSI chip is a 2940 and privided the chip is working, the SCSI CD should be addressed and driver loaded using a W9x full boot disk, since it should have the proper ASPI drivers included. Have you attached another SCSI CDROM and verified it's settings for termination and ID(in case of conflicts)? Usually, these things are almost bulletproof, if very slow.

it boots fine and thru set up everything works fine just the CD is giving me problems. It has no operating systems and smoothwal is what i was going to use. I do not have another scsi cd-rom . It;s ok though if i can't get it to work i'll throw it away :) :)

You can usually pick up used SCSI CDROMs for next to nothing at computer consignment shops. You may also want to see if Freecicso might serve your needs. It loads from a floppy disk.
