I heard somebody saying that they were going with the AMD 64 3000 over the 2500+ so they could play "64-bit games" when they started coming out. What exactly does that mean, and why couldn't I play 'em with my 2500+?

Because they are coded to work for a 64bit cpu whereas your barton is a 32bit cpu.

So, I would be totally unable to run them? When are these games going to be released? Could he run 32 bit games on his 64?

Yeah (sorta - if its an AMD) because the 64bit architechure was designed to be backwards compatable, and run 32bit software as well.
