View Full Version : Help...I broke my computer...
Hi guys. Well, I really did it this time. I have a Celeron 600 overclocked to 750 (Abit BE6 MB) which runs very nicely. The temps were a bit high so I bought a GlobalWIN 32 fan got some thermal goop and changed the fan without too much trouble. BUT, now my computer doesn't work. When I start it I get a long beep then it starts beeping at regular intervals. There's nothing on the monitor at all (it appears as if the computer is off), though it "sounds" like it's booting up normally. The fan is spinning nicely. I double checked everything I could see that plugs in, in case I knocked something loose, and yes I made sure the monitor etc was plugged in properly. What did I do??? *cries*
A bit more info...I just swapped graphics cards with my second computer to see if that made a difference but there was no change. Did I fry my motherboard?

If you're getting beeps, then your board ain't fried, at least I dont think so..sounds like either your h.s.is not seated, or the cpu is not seated properly, if this is a slot one board, I am guilty of not getting the cpu card all the way in, and my board starts beeping like crazy...you might also get a list of error beep codes that will tell you what is wrong...I don't know what bios your mobo uses, but both award & via maintain a list on their sites, or they used to.
one other scary thought is that you might have cracked the cpu die when you installed the h.s. I hope it was something else.
id try like he said about gettin the cpu u in straight first.. from there maybe its bad ram or your keyboards unplugged :X ..ram happens to go bad alot now adays >;\ (crappy ram anyway).. id take every card out and unplug everything. test it with only video card, keyboard and ram plugged in. (and cpu ofcourse)
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm willing to try anything, but this does not bode well I think. I tried reseating everything I could think of, then I tried my old processor (thank goodness I kept it) with the same results.

Ouch !
I was thinking about janking my CPU out
to put in some thermal grease or some
of that Artic silver stuff, but now I am
scardt.
....It seems to be pretty cool anyways.
have you tried the old fan ???
the new fan may take to much power from the board,......
connect it directly to the powersupply if possible,.......

Not sure about all the beeps, althought 3 beeps on my system tells me the video card is in wrong.whenever I mess with the pc and i get beeps or it just won't run I go back and make certain that all the cables and cards are seated properly.Check your proc. and make sure its seated right.Check your RAM.
Good luck
I just tried the old fan with no difference. I have reseated everything at least twice now, and swapped vid cards with no change. Again thanks everyone for your suggestions...I really appreciate the help. :-)
Many times a long beep indicates a ram error. Try removing the ram and reinstalling it. If you have multiple dimms try them individually.
I took the ram out and replaced it with no change.
All those are very good suggestions, here's another couple suggestions for you.
Disconnect the power to the Power supply and Clear the cmos, that may help clear up some problems.
Try using a slot I processor if you have any friends who might have one to let you test it out. As well as a spare stick of ram lying around to check it out with. Assuming that is a slot I mobo. Otherwise try obtaining another 370 chip from a friend for a go, after clearing the CMOS.
Those tips may help a little bit. Typically one long and multiples does mean ram errors I hope that's not so. But would be the cheaper of the two for you to replace.

Hello...I'm really really sorry to hear your story but believe me I know your pain too well. You see...I had the exact same motherboard (BE6 original version) and well...when trying to get my celeron 566@850 up to 900mhz... (I'm stupid, it had been working fine at that speed for months)...I accidentally shorted out one of the pins on my slotket to 3.2v instead of 1.9 volts (DAAMN!!!) and needless to say I smelled smoke. The computer immediately shut itself off...I knew I had at least fried my cpu, but wasn't sure about the motherboard. Tried every single possible thing I could to check the integrity of the motherboard....but yet still no video...even after putting in a brand new celeron 700....so the board was toast. The only beep code I would get was a never ending sequence of high/low alternating beeps (like a European police car siren)...which at first I thought was a glimpse of hope....but ended up meaning that the board was toast. Reallly really really sucks....I had to get a brand new board....I really loved that board....don't want to bring you pre-mature bad news (because I don't know if yours still has a chance at life) but if you get the same beep code odds are most likely it has seen its end...hope this helps...and good luck!! ninja

Aey Duxie,
Im afraid it's possible that your CPU has been *fried* like french fries. I am not kidding. This can happen.. . The CPU will be fried if the HSF is not installed. The CPU **still** can be fried even if the HSF is not correctly seated. But I hope not your CPU is fried though. Let us hope not. If you did everything you could by reseating the PCI components, RAM modules, Im afraid it might be your CPU fried.
Thanks everyone for all your ideas and help. I've read a lot the last day and I've tried all of your suggestions with no success which leads me to believe my mobo is dead. When I finally resolve this issue I'll let you all know what happened. Thanks again. :-)
