Hey guys,

I'm running a P3 700, CO stepping, and it's running at 933... it runs fine, yet, my MB monitoring software and MBM 5 report a core temp of 71 deg C.... this is not good.

I'm using a golden orb heatsink, and have 2 other case fans.... if I run my system for hours I keep getting the warnings.

I took off my heatsink, and reapplied thermal compound.... yet it still reports 71... I have not experienced any sort of problems that I would expect with temps of this magnitude.....

if I take my heatsink off, it is warm... but not too hot..
and the chip is also.. if I warm reset my system after it for a couple of hours, and go into the bios, the chip temp is reported at around 37.... am I being unrealistic to think the h/s could lose 34 deg C in about 5 seconds ???

My Board is a QDI advance 9, with the VIA Apollo 133 chipset..

any ideas ? / am I right to not worry ??

if you get 70 degrees in windows,.....do a reboot and check your bios temperature,......this one ist correct,.....

i think that your cpu would not run at 70 degrees,.....it would crash all the time,......try leaving the case open you can then feel the temperature ,.....

Looks to me that MBM is not reporting the true temperature. To get a feel if itīs correct you can run for max for about half an hour and then open the case and touch the CPU heatsink. If itīs hot enough to feel burning itīs about 70C. It should not be this way! My Cel600 is running at 900 at 1.8V and it gets to 29C at full load.

I think the gorb is adequate for mild clocking, but I don't think it's for serious clocking....and lets face it most of us that frequent this site are extreemists. I would go for an Alpha or equivelant..that way you wouldn't have to worry so much. I run my cpu maxed out...way over volt, way high fsb, and under full load, with prime95 & q3a running temp rises to 34c max.
although Arctic silver made a BIG diff in temp....mine went from 30c idle, to 24c at idle, and before A.S. full load would see temps as high as 37,38c.
A big mistake people tend to make is putting too much grease on the h.s.
and the cheaper compound, the worse the heat transfer problem...and in extreeme cases it will actualy insulate the h.s. from the cpu.
and if your h.s. mounting has any play, like a lot of these clip on h.s.fan combo's...you can carefully twist the h.s. to make sure it has a good contact,But be carefull not to crush the cpu die, as it is very fragile.
Of course that is why I preffer the alpha there ain't no slop...the slot 1 ver anyhow. I haven't seen the pep66..but I imagine it clips on like other socket type h.s.
BTW, I saw an article about making your own thermal probe, and using a lcd display mounted anywhere you want, but I can't remember where I seen it. If I find the article I will post a new thread, titled thermal probe.
Hope this helps

Doc Clock,

Thanks, that would be appreciated. I'm gonna go anse buy some artic silver tomorrow, and possibly an Alpha h/s too.

If you could find the article it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
