Hey guys,

I'm soon going for a new intel rig with these specs:

Abit IC7-Max3 or Abit IS7-E ???????
P4 2.4c
KHX PC 3200 (non-A) or PC 3500 Or Corsair XMS PC 3200 (Not sure which one to get)
Antec SL400 (400w) (Its 1 year old, from my current rig)
80 gig Maxtor HD
G4 Ti 4600
Floppy Drive and CD-RW
Thermaltake Case

Now my questions are: Would i get a good OC with that mb and proc? What stepping do you guys suggest on that p4 2.4c? And what HSF do you guys recommend to cool it ? :D

Any suggestions, comments on what i should get ??

Any advice and help would be appreciated

Thanks:)

The best would be an steping M0, although the D1 will do well also. I have a D1 on a IC7 on air at 3.1GHz.

Also, if you think you will drive your ram pretty high in voltage, do some reading in the ABIT Intel section of these forums. I believe there were some problems with the IC7-Max3 and I am not sure they have been solved.

You may want to look at the AI7, although it is a new board...

Ok, I went to the ABIT Intel Section and read over some of the issues on that IC7-Max3 board at high vdimm voltages... Anyways, here where I live (Chile) there isn't a large variety to choose of..so another option would be the P4C800-Deluxe... What do you guys think?? Suggestions?

depends on whether you are willing to do a vdimm mod on a p4c800. How high you want to overclock the 2.4c.

If you want to get past say 3.4 /3.5 your probably going to need a vdimm mod. (get a second opinion, its around that figure tho)

If you are not willing to do that you can get a abit AI7 which have a vdimm of 3.2 :p

Good luck on your overclock

I would be very happy with a 3.4/3.5ghz OC... I would like to get my hands on an abit AI7 but they dont sell them here :( .... So.. the P4c800 DLX or Abit IS7-E or IC7-G or? Which one would be best for a max OC on the p4 2.4c ? Oh and since you mentioned the vdimm mod... how much vdimm does the p4c800 DLX go up to Without the mod? I don't think i would be capable of doing that mod...

Thanks for your reply

I'd be glad to take any other suggestions :D

Hola Chile. Here is a drop of reality.. the "max OC" term would be on water or something more exoteric...

You should be ultra extremely happy with a 3.4/3.5 OC on air... From what I have read, if you are not a really hard core overclocker, you should set your expectations a little lower, like 3.1/3.2 and then dance all you want if you go any higher. I am not a hard core OC. I imagine a real HC OC gets the adrenaline flowing every time he/she increases the FSB and voltage of various parts, and is not bothered by occasionally killing one of these parts. It is like skydiving (without leaving your room) and occasionally getting a broken leg.. ':p'

I wanna become a hard core ocer :p

anyways.. You can check out the stepping of the CPU outside the box of the chip? And also ive heard M0 chips are good ocers and D1's are pretty good aswell... How are they shown in whole stepping code? an example would be nice

Thanks

It's an MO if the product code ends in SL6Z3. You can also check the revision using CPU-Z

As far as the motherboard choice, the P4C800-E is your absolute best bet (I have owned a MAX3).

Anybody can do the vdimm mod on that board as no soldering is involved. You basically only need a pot and Grabbers.

Cheers and good luck with the new rig :) !

Thanks Amair and Sunspt I will indeed go for the P4C800-E and ill check out the procs steppings to figure out which one to buy.
I would do the vdimm mod if i can get my hands on the materials :p ill see what i can do

Thanks again.

I've got two respectable overclocks with IC7 mobos that aren't modded.

The IC7 doesn't have any issues like the IC7-Max3 does (vdimm and vtt) ????????????????????????

The Max3 only has those issues if you try to go above 2.8v vdimm and not all the mobos seem to have the problem. The newest Max3's being shipped have solved the vdimm stability problem, but the VTT is not fixed yet (again only above 2.8v) The IC7 and IC7-G has a max vdimm of 2.8v.
