A computer-unfriendly- friend brought me his 'golden oldie' PC with a P 166. Anybody out there who has some hints for me how to OC this CPU?

Thanks

Sure bump up the bus speed to 75 and get him to spend 40$ on a K6-2 550 Which will bring the speed up to 450MHz not bad for a Moldy Oldy Eh ? =)

Can you feel the speed!

Thanks!!!!!! How to speed up the bus speed on those oldies? Via BIOS?

And does the K 6-2 550 fit without any problems on the mobo?

Well firstly you need to set the FSB Higher, via Jumpers on the mobo. Hunt around a bit they should be somewhere near the socket. Then you will need to set the CPU Clock Ratio to 2.0x The AMD K6 will then read that as a 6.0x Multiplier, pretty trick hey ? From there you are going to need to change your voltage to the neccessary requirements, the K6's have the vcore voltage listed on the chip which I believe is 2.3 Volt's according to the 550 I am holding in my hand.

To get 500MHz out of it push the bus speed up to 83MHz

Realistic Speed Expectations are as follows...
500 MHz 6 x 83 MHz
450 MHz 6 x 75 MHz
400 MHz 6 x 66 MHz

I was running 450 Due to the fact I can't post a bus speed faster than 75MHz on my ASUS VX97 Board. Make sure you cool this puppy good, it will run a little hotter than that pesky 166. There is no problem running the Super7 Proc on a Socket 7 Board, you can alo use a socket 370 Fan on it as well Such as those nice alphas or my favorite the Gorb =) If you need some more info check out this here...

Even if you are only able to run at stock Bus speed of 66MHz that is still a 400MHz upgrade for cheap and you are actually underclocking the processor. I recommend the little K6-2 Trick to anyone looking to milk a little performance out of their system. Plus it's great if you have kids and want to build them a cheap but AWESOME computer =) That definately will not kill your pocketbook.
