First off, I'm normally a mature 40 something guy. But now, I got caught up in the big case modding craze.
My old generic ATX mid-tower case is functional and has served me well for a couple years now. Is it bad that I want an unique, individualized, attractive and improved cooling case?
I wanted my mods to be conservatively and tastefully done. You know, a classic work of art. Oh yeah, had to be cheap too.
I'm adding two more fans for a total of 4 auxilary case fans, 2 pulling fresh air from the front and two exiting air out the back. One is a slot fan next to the video card. I have some of that black plastic auto conduit and small wire ties that I'm using to round my drive cables.
I decided that adding a noisy blowhole fan in the top wasn't critical with my setup, but I still didn't want hot air to build up in the top area. So. I drilled a pattern of holes in the top of my case to allow ventilation.
Next, I tried painting my case a metallic gold. Even a clueless guy such as myself could tell it was too dark and didn't match anything. It also smudged when you touched it.
So, off to Wal-Mart where I bought a couple cans of Fleck Stone spray can paint. This is a slightly textured base paint with little splatters of other colors mixed in. I choice a lighter gray color (several to choose from) that turned out quite excellent. It looks like granite rock. Nice! You have to spray about three light coats to cover it good. Of course proper sanding and prep before hand.
I'll post a pic tomorrow or the next day when I get the front face done and it's all back together. Wow, this is fun! You're only limited by your imagination. I'll probably add some little bat sticker onto the front in honor of my nickname.
