View Full Version : Help oc'ing CelII 600 cC0
I got a Cel II 600 cC0 stepping . No luck with my HP oem mobo. It won't flash Asus Bios. it's a P2B-98XV with an HP oem customized bios chip. I know I could buy and install an Asus BIOS chip for $25,but I think a new mobo more suitable for oc'ing would be a better investment. What Mobo would you reccomend. I am planning on getting an Abit BE6 II v.2 unless someone talks me out of it. I have the abit Slotket!!!. I understand this chip is a coppermine.. One of the Slotket jumpers selects either a "ppga 370" CPU or Coppermine according to the documentation, but on the actual Slotket board the jumper reads Celeron or Coppermine. I should set it to Coppermine, right? Any advice on how to best overclock this chip is appreciated.

Hmmm.. im wondering that myself now, the iWill Slocket II has the same thing, Celeron or Coppermine. I set it to Celeron, is that right? I have a Celeron 600Mhz cB0 @900Mhz
You should select coppermine for both those chips. By selecting celeron you are probably overvolting the chips a fair bit. This has been known to limit their overclocking abilities. Increased Vcore can be a good thing, but excess can be a problem, and also generate a lot of heat.

I have an IWILL slotket II which is apperantly an older version of the Abit adapter, and I got it to work using the " FCPGA" setting, and also set the adapter at 133 bus, but i have it set at 100 in the bios, but had to go to 1.85v to get it running reliably. (89f temp, 72f room temp) If you are going to go ABIT for a new MB, consider the BX133-RAID . You can get a good increase at HD read/write speeds by using the RAID feature and getting 2 100ATA HD's to put into it, and it is a Socket370 board with the same BIOS as the BE6-II ( it's what I plan to get next)

Pulling the eeprom & replacing with a std. unit from Asus tech support may be a cheaper investment than buying a new mobo. However, if you are dead set, check out the BX133 by Abit, the Asus P3V4X & there may be two or three other boards you could use by Soyo, Epox, etc.
As for the Slotket III - jumper it for Coppermine. My own CellyII wouldn't even post with the Celeron setting.
Thanks for the excellent advice guys! Seems like i've got a lot of "win-win" solutions to consider. I think a new mobo is gonna be the way to go in lieu(snotty soundig word, eh?) of replacing the EEPROM due to the fact of the HP custom bios not being the only HP mod. They also ganked the AGP slot and but in a crappy 4mb ATI Rage OEM onboard chip and God only knows what other surprises may be hidden on this board. If any one has successfully upgraded an HP 6370Z I would love to hear from them. I need to come clean with you guys though. Sonner or later someone's gonna ask me what type of cooling I'm using. So in the spirit of Jesse Jackson's confession :eek!: I must admit that I purchased my CPU and fan from (drum roll) Step Thermodynamics. Now, ya have to admit, from all outward appearances it should be a good chip. I mean it IS a cC0. And Step does *SAY* they guarantee it for life. Hope I don't have to test that claim! So far I am pleased with the company. I ordered on 12-17-2000 and received the package on 1-10-2001, within the time-frame promised. The throttlebody fan controller card was not in with my order, there was a notice that it was on back-order due to "extremely high demand". I also purchased 128 meg of PC133 ram from them. I read since then that Step may be re-marking ram. SiSoft Sandra identifies it as 133Mhz so I guess I,m okay there. It has been co-existing with two 64 meg sticks of PC-100 ram for over a week now with no problems.
Damn this post has turned into a short story. Sorry so long. I'll keep you updated on my progress, and check back for further advice.
Thaks again all,
Slake.
Oh, one more thing. Should I remove the heatsink/fan and clean off the thermal paste I applied before I installed and found it wouldnt post?

Don't sweat the small stuff?...Hell, it's ALL small stuff!

HI Again
I've had good luck with a aftermarket fan/heatsink combo not too different from the Intel boxed one, but I sanded the anodizing off of the contact surface to the CPU ( anodizing is a thin coating of a chemical treatment that prevents corrosion when exposed to severe conditions, but is cosmetic and may prevent heat transfer) using 300 and then 600 grit wet sanding paper on a smooth glass surface, and then used new thermal heat sink compound ( radio shack) and seems to work well for me. Also I reached 900 mhz with an ATI Expert 128 /16mb video card ( AGP ) and also with a Voodoo3000 ( PCI) , but the Voodoo is faster and can be o'cd too, found a good utility program if you need.
Thanks Joe, I have a Voodoo3 also, and use "Powerstrip to OC it to 170Mhz. I have a case fan on it to keep it cool. I probably will sand the cpu after I get it running. There is an article on this site with the details.
