View Full Version : What is the best method of cooling on the AlphaPEP66T, sucking or blowing?

To the Owners of the AlphaPEP66T Heatsink and Fan Users:

The factory recommended setting for the AlphaPEP66T (the heatsink that is made to accomodate all the "slotket" users on the slot 1 mobo's) is to "SUCK" the air out of the heatsink. Has anyone tried doing the opposite, flipping the fan over and installing the fan so it can "BLOW" the air towards the mobo? Will this result in a better cooling method than the factory recommended setting?

Thanks.

On my BF6/slotket exhausting the air from the heatsink works best. On my VP6 socket MB with the PEP66's shrouds turned, blowing into the heatsink improved it by 2 degrees.

tim - I gotta ask ya - since a PEP66 is designed for a slocket converter, , you'll notice that the fan blows in or sucks out ( depending on how you mounted the fan. The CPU is actually on the side of the FAN not directly at the bottom of that fan like we normally see on orbs or FOB38s and such.

so, - I figure - its either blowing or sucking the air off the heatsink fins and into the case- the temperature drops you or I must experience could be do to which way is the bettter air circulation that disperses the hot air - whadaya tink?

I use the PEP66's on my VP6 dual PIII socket MB. By turning the fan shroud 90 degrees the fan sits on top. With the shrouds mounted for slotket use as it was designed I found the best cooling occured when the fan was blowing away from the heatsink- (label away from shroud).

However on my socket board and the fact that the air flow pattern is no longer symmetrical the efficiency was improved by blowing into the shroud.

With the shrouds turned you are no longer blowing into one side of the heatsink and out the other. You are blowing into the top towards the base and venting out of one side,

tim - you can fit 2 PEP66's on a VP6?- wow- I'd like to see that - got pics? - youre fusing a full tower? - I was thinking of upgrading to a an i815 mobo - possibly an Abit SA6R or Asus CUSL-2,

but if a VP6 can handle 3 PEP's -wellll -- maybe I should try for some SMP action here

Here's a picture when I was sizing things up. They fit just fine.

dauym Tim - that mobo looks sweet- how fast are ya going on Win2K? are your PEP66 fans sucking or blowing? whata racket it must make - my PEP has a 38CFM fan on it and it whistles man.
