View Full Version : Leave the pump on 24/7?

OK, one last question before the water cooling begins. When I get the pump, should I invest in one of those relays, or should I leave it on all the time? I read somewhere that these pumps were not meant to be switched on and off all the time. Would it be best to leave it on? Makes me somewhat nervous....any thoughts?

I have a ViaAqua 1300 and I leave mine on 7/24. It has been running for over 4 months at this point without any problems. I do have it plugged into a UPS along with the PC.

the pumps are designed to be on all the time, as they are commonly used with fish. The constantly turning on/off using relays and such, cause the unit to wear out quicker. Many users run theirs 24/7 and they last years(depending on the quality of the pump of course)
Although wiring in a relay is fun for those(us) soldering lovers. ;)

I personally run mine 24/7

24/7 here, even when I turn the pc off for those couple of minutes a year ;)

Well, that's good to hear. I guess I am just worried about springing a spontaneous leak in the middle of the night and waking up to my computer making a fireworks show. LOL. I guess that settles it! Thanks a bunch guys.

Actually it'd be the opposite as stated above:

Good question, worthy of a poll in my opinion. Linky (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=254953) with credit for the inspiration given to NinjaZX6R.

I leave my pump (Eheim) and computer on 24/7 and haven't had any problems for 6+ months. I think you'd be safe.

Yeah, you can't see the person's profile while replying to a post, so it must be short-term memory loss due to snow (or lack of alcohol).

I run my pump 24/7 also. I'd made a long post about mechanical relay bounce and a pump rattling when it first turns on (deciding which direction to turn), but that was some time ago.
Anyway, for the life of the pump, and especially if you have one you can't replace easily (cha-ching), leave it on 24/7 (unless it's a 12 volt pump, of course).
