I have tried to change the jumbers for the Bus speed to 60mhz but with no success. It only made it slower. Now I set the jumpers back and it still is incredibly slow. I have a compaq presario 972. (old junk)

How do I set the bios to handle 60mhz bus (i think the Ram gets messed up)

What do I have to change in the BIOS???

Hate to disappoint you, but trying to overclock an OEM pc is a waste of time. Firstly, Compaq doesn't want you inside their box. You will not find anything in the BIOS to help you out (a la Abit). Secondly, you're not gonna net any significant speed increases relative to current available software. Your best bet may be to seek out an Intel Overdrive processor, which may get you to the MMX spec; however, if you have to pay more than $50 it isn't worth the time or the trouble.
