View Full Version : Heh! I just bought 2 of the *new 74gig raptors.*
Welp, sold my Vapo and used the money to buy 2 of the new 74gig Raptors. Yes sir! Hard drive Nirvanna! Every review that I have seen about them is nothing less than KILLER! I used paypal to buy them at Monarchcomputers.com and....these are not the OEM 1yr warrenty drives.....these are the 5 year warrenty drives!!!!! Not that i will own these drives that long. Probably until something faster comes out! Like "SATA 2." I know what you are thinking..."he won't be able to tell a difference from his old raptor raid O." Yep...yer prolly right...but so what?! I will have them and I will like them.
Monarchcomputers link...$274 per drive. (http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=150239&Category_Code=SATAHardDrives)
Could you guys post some links to hard drive benching programs? Cause I want to post a comparison thread when I get them...between my old (34gig'ers) and new (74gig'ers) Raid O setups.
Thanks fellas, krag
the best bench for raid is ATTO drive test.. get this here..

Maybe I'm just stoopid or something but I can't find any thing on that site that says anything about "drive test." It's all sczi and raid software & drivers.

You want the Applications/tools and utilities download.
Hmmmmm,? My score seems very lopsided. While the wright seems good the read score is low.
Here is my Sandra score, 54K but I have anywhere from 72K to 61K on SAndra...I don't trust it for hard disks.

Sorry that just seems too low... I can hit 38K with my WD drive..... I might be wrong about your score... but with all this speed boost thing etc...thought you would of hit 70K atleast....

I have hit 70k before, with my Raptor RaidO but there is a problem with consistency on the Sandra file bench and the Sata raid. Maybe it will get updated?
Here is an older Sandra bench of 70k, with the same setup I have now.
How come we have such different scores??? Your 36gb raptors work better with smaller files, however mine is faster for larger:

I have the stripe setting at 8k.. how about you?
actually, I didnt set the benchmark right... here is my benchmark:

Is that good?

I'm not sure bro? The wright is smokin' but the read looks pretty lame....same goes for my bench too.?! Maybe someone who knows will tell us both?

Thats odd, all your benchmarks seem kinda off. I guess you guys benched when your drives were 1/4 filled with applications. This is what i get with only 15% of the drive filled up.

BTW, i too was contemplating about getting a pair of the new 72Gb raptors but concluded that the extra space was just going to be wasted. I use my raptor raid for the OS and applications and have never even used over 20Gb yet! 144 Gb seems awefully a lot for a C drive!
Also the newer raptors are only 10% faster in benches and i highly doubt that they would be noticeable over what i have already.
Hopefully next year WD revises the orginal raptors and puts on FDB motors and adds command queing, then it'll get a pair of those to replce these originals.
Yeah, I thought they were off too. This one is better. I selected 32mb and "overlapped IO" this time around. I got a much better score.
The read time sounds sodgy... how can u be hitting 160MB/s when the PCI bus is only 133MB/s.... Chipset drivers need a upgrade...may even be a BIOS update you will need??

LOL! The read is about right for that drive. It's similar to what storagereview.com got. The write? Well, the data is getting buffered for writing, and your benchmark program thinks it's written! Of course, so does the rest of the computer. Since writing goes slower than reading, this firmware-implemented strategy should significantly boost real-world performance.
And remember, that lower seek time should also make as big a boost as the increased read speed, at least in the real world.

Onboard SATA is one possibility... not all of these controllers are attached through the PCI bus. Another possibility is, (drumroll please,) Overclocking!
Thanks for the sweet info caffinehog!!
I just got an e-mail saying my drives have just shipped fedex 2 day!! Heh! The shipping was free....and I will have them in my hot little hands day after tomorrow....Christmas Eve no doubt!!!!!!!!!
I will be posting a comparisson with benchmarks between my "old" 36gig Raptor raid and my "new" 74 gig Raptor raid. Stay tuned folks!!!!!:D :D :D :D

nice krag, and do you think its really worth the money, as i was looking into getting two 36 gb raptors, but it it worht allt he extra money to have the 72gb?? I mean they are pricy so is the performance really worht it??

Ha! You're asking wether "performance is worth it?' In an overclockers forum? Ha ha ha.....
To a normal person. "No", would be the answer to that. heh! A normal person would not overclock thier computer let alone stripe 2 hard drives together for better performance.
But...I/We are not normal people, at least i don't consider myself....normal.:-/
Yes, I think its worth it...because I have enough money to buy them. All of my bills are paid, I have money in the bank and.....I have money for UPGRADES!! Muuhhahahahahahahahahah!:attn:

BTW - Make sure you defrag whatever drive/partition you're benchmarking Sandra on right before you bench. That can have a HUGE impact on your scores, as much as a 50% difference or so in my case. Sandra's dumb like that...
PCMark2002's HD test might be worth a shot too.

Yeah, I did that just before my 54K Sandra score but it didn't seem to help much.

You should also change que depth to the maximum of ten and run at least twice for a more accurate testing.Your results are very impressive!
Waahhhooooooooo!!
Can you say, "On FedEx vehicle. Out for delivery?" Yeah come to papa!!! As soon as I get them I'm gonna install em and post benchies.
All right! They are here!!! Now I am gonna do a backup to my PATA storage drive and install them. I will be posting the results here!!!
