what exactly is thermal grease is for
i also need to know what it is for and how to apply it to anything if it is supposed to be applied to something

Thermal grease is used to fill the surface imperfections on the cpu die and the heatsink. A very thin layer is applied to the cpu die (the part that sticks up) and when the heatsink is attached it will aid in thermal conduction. Excessive grease will act as insulation and cause heat to be trapped.
