If I get a retail chip, should I go ahead and get an orb?

thanks

An Orb is ok but an Alpha would be better

If you plan to OC the CPU, neither the "stock" HSF nor GORB are adequate. FOP-38 or Alpha with 38 cfm Delta are indicated. If you want to run the PIIIE 700 at spec, I suggest a GlobalWin FOP-32. CAUTION. Installing FOP's is hazardous to CPU's. Learn how to do it right before even starting.

Agreed- the Alpha is the first choice for overclocking. I've never used the FOP series, but I have 3 PEP66s on PIIIs at over a GHz. With the Delta fans temps stay below 35c. This is with good case ventilation- no heatsink around will cool well in a closed up box- you need flow through the box with heat exhausted from the case.

Those Delta fans are very annoying to some people. Some are cool with it They are way to loud for me. The alpha with the ystech fans will cool great without the hi pitched whine.

I went ahead an ordered a orb since
they are 8.95 at allstarshop and
the alpha's are 32 bucks a piece.
I will try the orb 1st, if I can't obtain
933 or above with the orb, then i may
get the alpha. Now, I need to order my cpu

Just lap that orb and you will see good results!
I purchased an alpha 6035\[ YS tech fan] recently and can tell you that my orb was slightly worse than the alpha, and I mean slightly!
The Gorb was a piece of crap until I lapped it,as much as 5c difference after lapping!

Hope this helps!

lap it? you mean the contact surface
on the orb wasn't completely flat?

Yup - the contact surface on a Golden Orb isn't all that flat. I have also lapped an Orb, and it helped very much, its performance was increased indeed. But still, it ain't all that good for overclocking, but maybe you can hit 933MHz with it, maybe even more.

Yea it's not as flat as It could be,The center of the base had an imperfection that was higher than the rest of it due to the machining process It seems.
But with a little effort it was flat and smooth and running cooler than ever!

Still not as good as my Alpha though!!

Alpha temps= 20\22c idle & 34\35c under heavy loads.
Gorb temps=25\26c idle & 40\41c under heavy load.

Well worth the extra for the Alpha in my opinion!

What did you guys do to lap it, or could someone
post a link?
One more thing, I have a adaptec scsi card, can they
handle oc above the normal freq?

Thanks

Many SCSI cards don't like high overclocking, so you might want to stay near the 33Mhz PCI speed, just to be sure.

When lapping a heatsink, you use some very fine sand paper, and something that is totally flat, like a piece of glass or something. Then lap the bottom of the heatsink till it's very flat and smooth. It'll help you getting the temps down a bit.

If you lap the Orb, you should not have any problems getting 933 Mhz. (Provide you get a Cco stepping CPU)
Fact is, i have hit 950 with a celeron with an Orb that wasn't lapped. It runs stable.
However, since lapping is not difficult, and produces better temps, no reason not to...

Yeah the delta fan may be good, but i couldnt bare my pc taking off at the speed of sound when i powered it up......at least thats what it sounded like.May as well just use 2 less powerful fans.

I also lapped my Gorb because of it's dismal performance. However, I found that when I removed the stock fan and replaced it by attaching a 60mm box fan atop of it, it's performance was greatly increased. I used the 60mm box fan because it can be afixed atop the orb simply by putting screws thru the mounting holes on the box fans frame then down inbetween the cooling fins of the orb. Made for 5-7 degree F. drop in tempeture compared with one that had only been lapped. Of course, it does take up a lot of room. Also, the added weight may pose a problem as well in some applications.

where did you guys stick the probe
to test the temparature, or is your sensor built into the motherboard.
I have the abit bx6r2 board.
I have the probe thingy from radio shack lying around somewhere.

thanks
