I just got my 9800pro today and installed, after installation I got rid of the old drivers (ati catalyst) and reinstalled the latest ones. fired up 3dmark 2k1 just to see the improvement. I was kinda suprise to see I only got 12000 compared to before with 8500 and slightly overclocked cpu which scored 10900. my 9800pro was at 410/368 when i did the bench, so I went on to test gamin performance in nfs:u which I was kinda suprise to see the same lag in 1024x768 with settings on high. I double chcked my display properties settings to make sure no fsaa or ansio was turned on for either ogl or d3d. so I'm here wonderin if my 9800pro is slightly underperforming or not...
cpu: 2400+ (stock settings)
ram: 768MB pc2100
video card: ATi radeon 9800pro
HD: WD 80GB JB
A format might be in order here.... Or the RAM might be a problem....

I just got a friend to bench his 2400+ system also at stock everything same ram speed but with a 9500 modded to 9700 at 300/300 and he scored 13000 lol
Its your RAM then.... Get better RAM mate.... :)
i think some people ere will agree... you should be getting more with a CPU like a XP2400+...

friend has same ram same ram speed as well, I just benched in 03, I scored in the range of 5700.
Yes that is great... now if you are still getting lag then you need to reformat....

I just chcked for frag and found that my drive is fairly fragged up file fragmentation is 52% lol.. maybe thats why..

if games lag and your 3dmark score is low, your being cpu limited. people need to understand the cpu side of the equation is very crucial and its the "brains" of your computer. get pc3200 and use 200fsb

no, I just wanted to find out why 9700 non pro runs significantly faster than a 9800pro on identical setups. if cpu were to a be a factor it still doens't explain why the 9700 non pro performs better than the 9800pro, the only I answerI can dig up is that the 9800pro is under performing cause of some problem within my machine.

did you upgrade to a 9800 pro? oh and did you plug the molex cable into that thing? If not, itll run underclocked since it needs more power

yes and yes.

That score is what my 9800np did @ stock. So yes something is amis. What drivers are you using. That will play a BIG factor in perfromance (ATi drivers sux)
Use either Catalist 3.7 or 3.10 for best results. Also Ocing the 9800 is advised. The 9800 Oc ok.....but the results are staggering. Raising the core / mem speed even 20mhz yeilds suprising performance gains (trust me)
Once you OC it you will be well within the 6500 range of 3dmark03

<-- on cats 3.10 also 9800pro is @405/364
I did a bench with 6x fsaa and 16x ansio on 3dmark 2k1 this morning and scored 11k lol.. wierd wierd.

you should not use aa/af in 3dmark, no wonder you scored low!!!!!!!!!

With AA and AF= 11k
NO AA, NO AF = 12 K
wierd?
Dont bench with 3DMark 2k1 if your CPU and FSB are at stock settings, period. Those people you see getting 18k with their cards is because they have a heavily overclocked CPU, and that makes a HUGE difference with 2k1. 2k3 on the otherhand, the CPU and FSB have little effect, thus the reason you got a nice score in that.
Again, if your running the rest of your system stock, toss 2k1 out the window, as your scores will always look bad in comparison.

the reason why I made this post is not why my scores look **** compared to 18ks 15ks, I'm just wonderin why my 9800pro (overclocked) is under performin when compared to a 9700 non pro (stock) with identical systems.
The 9700np is bottlenecked by all but the fastest processors. The 9700 Pro is bottlnecked by even the fastest. Unless your overclocking there wont be much of a difference between today's and yesterday's high ends without a P4C/A64 in your system

your cpu bottleneck prevents the 9800 pro from realizing anywhere near its performance. I had a ti4600 back on my 504MHz celeron and it was a bit slower than my ti500 and not much faster than the mx400. getting a tbird 1GHz helped alot then I upgraded more and more, its addictive :)

after switchin os from win2k3 to xp I've got almost 2000 points difference in 3dmark 01 and rougly 100 points difference in 3dmark 03. now I'm tryin to figure out why my gpu speed can't exceed 403 (I don't think heat is the issue, I have tried to cool it down with a room temp of around 15c, and had fans directin air on to the card)...
Before:
Win2k3
2400+ (12*175)
512MB pc2100 (1:1 ratio, cas 2.5)
Radeon 9800pro (403/367)
score: 13181 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7389871)
After:
WinXp Pro
2400+(12.5*173)
512MB pc2100 (1:1 ratio, cas 2.5)
Radeon 9800pro (403/367)
score: 15343 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7394752)
*ram timings are the same in both before and after

That score sounds about right now, I have a similar setup:
WinXP Pro
2400+ @ 2700+ (2.16 GHz, 166x13)
512MB PC2700
9800Pro (stock w/Cat 3.10)
3DMark01SE: ~15500
3DMark03: ~5600
You can use 3DMark ORB to compare to similar setups. Mine fall in the upper range of similar systems, so I think I'm doing pretty good for my setup.
Probably all the crap on your computer dragging you down before. With my old Ti4600, I lost over 1000 points from first install to 3 months later, just from installing programs and not defragging, etc.
BTW, my Ti4600 scored ~ 12500-13500 in 3DMark01SE, so a 2000 point jump was all I got. But I mainly bought the 9800Pro for DX9 support. Definitely got a big jump in 3DMark03. :D
When i reformatted on a system that had been installed for about 75 weeks i gained 2.4K in 3dmark01 (same drivers - card speed)

I have to fully agree....
with my 2.4b at 2880mhz I get 4732 in 3dmark03
with it at 3.4ghz I get 5839 in 3dmark03
this is all, non OCed 9700pro....I think that I can get better with my card, with a faster system.;)
btw, at 3.0ghz I get 15,258 in '01
and at 3.4ghz I get 17,301 in '01
time for me to OC this AIWonderfull card....

Moonman, how come you didn't mention from the beginning that you were running Win2k?
WinXP vs. Win2k does make BIG difference in gaming since Win2k wasn't built with gaming in mind.
