It was just yesterday that I was crusing at 1Ghz....

My PIII700@1008Mhz was stable no blue screens, no freezing, and the temps (@ 2.05 volts, I/O 3.66 volts) were at idle 37C/98F at full load were about 110 to 111F.

Today, I am freezing left and right. I don't know what the problem might be. When I boot up into windows I can see my wallpaper and then thats it it froze... not even the start button appears. I reboot again, then I get the "improper shutdown has been detected" scandisk window. After that then I am able to get into windows then to my horror the temps on the cpu at "idle" are a super high temp of 43C... to hot.

I have a P3V4x mobo, which I have taken every precaution to cool down. I have place "artic silver thermal adhesive" with a heatsink to the mobo "clock generator chip". I have also applied "artic silver thermal compound to the chipset with the green heatsink.

My cpu is a PIII700 FCPGA 'cb0' stepping with an Abit Slotket III adapter. The AlphaPEP66T is cooling the cpu with the "artic silver thermal compound". The fan on the Alpha is sucking air off of the heatsink. My case has 1 exhaust (back of case) and 1 intake (front of case) fan to maximize air flow.

If anyone has had a similiar problem please help!!!

I am going crazy trying to figure out what wnet wrong.

Thanks for info, but how do I seat the heatsink properly.. the wire that comes with the PEP looks pretty weak. Are there any modifications you did to seat it correctly. Thanks for any input.

Do I need to put the 4 little pads at the bottom of the heatsink for it to work properly?????

Did you remove the pads? They are to keep the sink stable on the slotket. Pull the slotket, wipe everything clean and without any compound on it put it back on. Look between the sink and p3 to see if there is any light. If so file carefully the pads one at a time until the sink is even on the chip. Then add a very very small amount of artic silver and put it all back together.

2.01v is getting very close to the blow me up limit IMHO. Of course, I'm one to talk with mine set at 1.90v and temps at idle 30C and full load 38C. Temps were higher before I did all the above on my P3-700.

Thank for the info, I didn't know that you have to file the pads down then put the compound then put the alpha in place on the cpu. I put the alpha with the pads this time around and know its very stable on the cpu, maybe later I will try to file each pad down for better contact.

Thanks again for the tip.

Since we both have the same mobo (P3V4x) what settings did you have to modify inorder to achieve your 1008Mhz speed??

Bios Settings??
I/O Voltage???
Fans??
Etc?

Thanks for your help.

dalva - ref: settings
BIOS 144bus, 1/1 mem timing, 1.95v with rest of advanced settings at default
Using Crucial PC133 (2X128) slots 2&3 @2/2/2/5 4way
I/O is a default 3.5v - did not change jumper to 3.6v
EDIT - FANS
Custom Enlight Case with 120mm front fan sucking in - 2X80mm pulling out. 1 is at back of case above slot and the other top of case aboe slot blowhole. Plus using Antec PP303X 300w power supply with smart fan.
