This is a heck of a deal on a great cooler
Yeah, you guys better swoop it! I just paid $29.99 plus shipping for mine about a week ago! This is hands-down the best GPU cooler for the Radeon chipsets. I can clock my 9800 XT core up to 470!!! With the stock cooler I could only do 430. (with the mcw50-t i got it to 500). I can't wait for the "copper" version to come out!! If it ever does?

Didn't this thing used to cost $12? Seems like before they came back in stock that's what they were...

how good is it compared to a heatpip zalman?
They had a problem with my last order about a month ago and by the time it was straightened out, they were out of stock. They asked if I wanted to put the order on backorder or cancel. I cancelled since I didn't really use my 9800 all that much and just knew it ran hotter than my Ti4200. Much hotter. When they got it back in stock, they raised the price $29.99. F'em. Now they're just price gouging, knowing they're one of the few online retailers for these coolers. That AND the msrp is supposed to be $22USD from Arctic-cooling's own site (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/en/products/vga_silencer/).
Now that it's $21.99, I ordered one. I've ordered from them a few times before and they shipped on time and wasn't too bad on orders but this experience kinda left me with a bad taste in my mouth. There was one other place that sold them but their site looked a bit shady so I held off. Good thing I did.

Does it really? It seems like by the pictures the Zalman has a greater surface area. I myself have the Zalman passive heatpipe but this is a tempting deal. It'd have to be a lot better for me to jump on it though...

It was never $12, it was $24.99 then raised to $29.99 and now its $21.99
SVC is the only vendor in the USA that I'm aware of that is selling it. Note they sell out often so if you want one, don't wait to long.

I must agree. I have one on my 9800np and I can get XT core speeds out of it with no problem. I have is set a little lower at the moment until I install Ram Sinks on it but this cooler rocks!!
**edit** I got mine for $29.99 and it is worth every penny.

Nope. 9500(pro), 9700(pro), 9800(pro).
From their brochure:
From February 2004, we will launch a verison that is compatible with the 9600 (pro/XT) boards.

Ummmm thats not right. I have one on my BBA 9600pro and its clocked at 540 so I kcnow it is doing its job. Dont know why they say it wont work. All the bolts lined up and the HS was in the right place. It actually worked better whan on my 9800. On the 9800 the thing doesnt go to the end of the card. It kinda sticks inside a little. On the 9600pro it goes right to the edge of the card and blows all the air outside.

Magnus told me it would fit all 9xxx series of cards, he mentioned the 9800xt version will be a copper/Al hybrid.

I think you're being a bit harsh on them. Its simple supply and demand really. They sell the stuff faster than they can stock it...so you raise the price to decrease the demand. I think pretty much any seller would have done the same, newegg does it all the time. Items that were out of stock usually come back in stock costing more than before when they went out of stock.

Actually, it's the percentage of the markup. NewEgg does NOT mark up any product 40% of a msrp. I first ordered it when it was $24.99 knowing that the msrp of $22USD was printed on the product site. It's more principle than anything else. SVC knows there's people out there that will pay a premium for something new and in limited avalibility, thus taking advantage of them. It might sound harsh but that's just the facts that I based my purchace decision on. I'm glad I waited.
I've ordered a few times from SVC before and they are pretty good with orders so I wouldn't hesitate ordering from them again.

I ordered mine today and it shipped today... well that's SVC for ya.

Found this statement on Arctic Coolings web site
"VGA Silencer Compatibility Issues
The VGA Silencer dimensions are described in detail below. The height dimensions in various colors represent
the highest possible dimension of the graphic card components. Using this information it is possible to check
the compatibility of the cooler with a specific graphic board by measuring the height of the components.
Pay careful attention to the distance between the two mounting holes and the distance between mounting
hole 1 and bracket (76.75mm).
Further important is the distance between mounting hole 2 and the bottom edge of the graphic board.
Otherwise there should be no compatibility problems.
In general the cooler fits on the following graphic boards:
-ATI Radeon 9500 (Pro), 9700 (Pro), 9800 (Pro) ; not compatible to All in Wonder and XT Versions
-from Revision 2 compatible to All in Wonder versions
-From February 2004 we will launch a version that is compatible to 9600 (Pro, XT) boards.
-Nvidia Geforce 3 TI"
Guess that leaves me out for my new AIW 9800pro xmas gift. I still ordered one for my 9700pro that will be religated to my backup rig.
ATI Radeon 9500 (Pro), 9700 (Pro), 9800 (Pro) ; not compatible to All in Wonder and XT Versions
Hmmmmm? Works fine on my 9800 XT! No problems what so ever.
Just got mine today. Ordered on the 22nd and received on the 24th. This suckers big!.
I'll probably install it later today :D.

I've ordered from SVC twice, both times they've bungled things up. I also have a bad taste in my mouth from this place...

What are you in a time warp? When I wrote that it was in December 2003 and at that time what I wrote was correct. I know all about the $12 deal because I bought one for that $12 price, but posting I'm wrong about what I wrote 5 months ago is ridiculous. BTW it was $12.99 + shipping and it was on sale on 2/13/04
