Because of Overhead.... My 80Gig HDD 74GB... Don't worry about it

yea, when you format a drive (I think this is what causes it...) you loose space. 2 80 gig drives in a RAID 0 configuration shows up at 154 GB on Windows, don't sweat it.

The reason is simple: Your HD needs some space to store it's file allocation table....
You will never ever get to use the full 120 gig, whatever filesystem you install.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

ive seen software that is bundled w/ the HD such as the maxblast software from maxtor that supposedly lets you take the full amount of space in your harddrive. i dont think its true though. i tried it on my old 40 gig and it didnt even format correctly (this was about 2, 3 years ago btw).

A hardisk has to have some sort of index of what it contains...

No it's actually that you have a little less space than whatever gigs you have. The hardware manufacturer's produce the hard drive as 1000mb = 1 gig, in reality though 1 gig = 1024 mbs.
there is a conversion of how it works.

80 gigs = 81920 mbs but your harddrive only has 80,000mbs so

80,000mbs=78.125gigs
