Well i just got a 2.8C for xmas with a matched pair of kingston hyperx pc3200, so my question is how much should i overclock and what timings should i put for my memory. I had a 2.4b and oc'ed that to 3.2 with no problems but seeing how i got new ram im not sure what my limits are and what timings i should set, i never really understood the whole timing thing. I have stock cooling also.

What i saw with my system is that it did not go over 267 fsb with 2-5-2-2 timings. I messed around with them and set it to 2.5-3-3-7 and now im at 292 fsb.

I'd set the memory for the 5:4 ratio and leave the timings at SPD (default) at least at first until you find out the limits of your system. On your Asus mobo, the BIOS settings for the RAM dividers are like 400 (1:1) and 320 (5:4) I think. After you find out what the CPU and mobo will do, then you can go back and fine tune the RAM later.

thanks bat boy i already did the memory timings but i didnt see your psot i got up to a fsb of 226 giving me 3164 but when i try to go to 227 (3178) system hangs on burn in run #2 in sandra but the temps seem fine 43C max maybe i should up the vcore or mess with my timings?

maybe i should change those timings a little?

The farthest I have gotten is 248 fsb. This is at 1.6 volts.
It will run Windows at 250 fsb, but crashes under Prime95 even at 1.7 volts. (don't want to go any higher)
Have the ram at 5:4 running at 197 mhz 2-2-2-5.

Just can't get to that magical 3.5 (250)/ 200mhz ram mark, stable. :(

i raised my vcore to 1.65 im thinking should i go down one notch i think its 1.62 but everything seems stable im at 3.2 stable with idle temps at 31C and load at 45C stock cooling, but should i go down to 1.62? or should i stay at 1.65 and up the fsb a few more and test it?

I am using the same ram as you and at that speed I was running the ram at 2-3-3-6. That was at 1:1 (400) speed.
Don't raise your Vcore anymore, but try going up on your FSB, also change your memory ratio to 5:4 (320).

Also something they didn't tell you.........
Lock your PCI/AGP to 33/66 (in the bios)
Also to run at a good timing raise your Dimm voltage to 1.8. That is was is propbably holding you back. That low timing ram is rated at 1.65 +- .2 volts. takes alot of power to run it.

Let us know what happens then.

ive been running at a 5:4 ratio the whole time but thanks for informints me, and i locked the pci/agp slot, so if i raise the dimm voltage what does this really do for me? im not sure what that really does, i know if give more juice but im not too clear as to why, im pretty stable at 3.26 with 1.65 vcore

edit i dont have an option for dimm volate that says 1.8, i have ddr reference voltage but no 1.8 the only 1.8 is in AGP VDQ Volatge did you mean 2.8 for the ram?

Bad me.... I meant 2.8.
This will allow tighter ram timings. You should be able to do the ram at 1:1 (400) ratio at 2-3-3-6.
Also the higher voltage to the ram, makes it more stable. It will cause your computer to crash, just like the processor will.

Batboy,
what is your vcore and ram settings?

thanks

ok will this in any way be bad for my ram? ie burn it up?

No, stock votage is 2.6 +-.2 volts.
Which means you can run it at 2.8 and still be in spec.

The Kingston low lat. ram uses more power than other ram.
My crucial stock voltage was 1.5 volts. Big differance in manufactures specs.
You also have that pretty blue heatsink on yours which alot of others don't. :)

As long as you have good case ventilation, 2.8v vdimm is probably no problem, but at this point since you aren't pushing your RAM that much yet, I doubt you'll need more than 2.7v vdimm. When I'm running max O/C, like 295 FSB or above, I'm using the 3:2 ratio with my KHX PC3000. I can use 2,3,2,6 timings. I don't remember off the top of my head what vcore I've been using (out of town until after the New Year), but I think it was 1.65v when running 295 FSB (and 1.675v when trying to run at 300 FSB which I'm still not stable).

Batboy, haow is the **** do you get to 295 fsb?

I thought I was doing good at 245 fsb. :)
