VMware??? Or something like that!?
-------
Why not make another partition and install win98 on your first one and Xp on the second partition. Remeber to install 98 first. If you install xp firstand 98 second, then the 98 bootloader will overwrite the xp bootloader which has the menu for selecting what OS to load.

Yup, it's called VMWare workstation. Don't expect sound in the guest system to be very good and also 3d acceleration is very limited afaik.
Here's a nice screenie:

awsome.... i've ben looking for like 15+ hours......
anyone know if it'll let me run a debugger in 98 while running xp with VMware? or will the two OSs conflict??
thanks

VMWare offers two options:
* Either you install the guest system directly to your HDD (I've never tried this as this is not supposed to be a good thing to do)
* Or you install it to your "virtual PC". Now, this virtual PC is nothing more than a file on your HDD. Your guest system is installed inside this file. It thinks that the file is a HDD. This way there is NO way you can mess up your primary OS or HDD. You can access internet via virtual bridged networking or virtual NAT, which works perfectly. You can make a virtual network to your primary OS, so you can read/write/copy files from both OSes.
This is the best I can do, I hope you can make some sense of what I've written... :)
yes.. thank you very much :-D

There is one more product you might want to look at. Microsoft has re-released Connectix's Virtual PC as Virtual PC 2004, I'm not sure how they compare, though I expect the Microsoft product to have somewhat less functinality than the VMWare prodcut. However Virtual PC is also $150-$200 cheaper.
Did another quick search while writing this, and came up with an x86 emulator at http://bochs.sourceforge.net. This one is open source, and may not be as polished or compatible as the commercial software, but its free. You may want to google for x86 emulators, since this was the first link I saw and didn't look any further.
There is also Microsoft(formally Connectix) Virtual PC which I use, its essentially the same thing, allows you to run serveral OS's at the same time, I use it for testing applications on different OS's. Its really nice when you have dual monitors cause you can have XP on one monitor and say 98 full screen on the other, just as if thye were 2 different PC's.

VMware, isnt that for linux also?
Do any of these emulators (VMware, Virtual PC) emulate the hardware configuratoins also? i have a Fast Multimedia card (video capture and output) which was quite costly, and it will not run on XP Pro. Many people try using its NT drivers, but that results in the BSOD. Others dual boot, but id hate to boot into 98, which doesnt support my dual cpu rig in the first place just to capture video, then reboot to XP just to edit it.

I heard (from acomputer expert that uses both) that the virtual pc is easier to use and nicer iterface but vmware gives you more controll.

There is another way to have both os's. If you have two partions of a second hard drive, you can have xp loaded on the other partition or hd and will be dual boot. You select which os you want to enter during boot.

So you can quickly test something out in another OS without having to reboot :D
The virtual OS is also fun to tinker on cause if you break it... just delete the HDD image and make a new one... or you can actually make a copy of it and just replace it if it gets crapped in a matter of seconds.

Not sure why I would run it at the same time, but it looks like the thread starter want's to...

Seems odd to me but I am sure it has its benefits. Heck if nothing else, it is something new to play with:D
