hi all, i have a dtk computer with a i486-dx chip, i was wonderin what u guys think of this chip , i know its old but i like old things. with air then water , then cooled water, what is the highest mhz this chip can take, as in fsb, internel cpu, and voltage needed.??? i am very new at this stuff, i actually hated computers until i bought this 1 , then a freind of mine gave me a computer technichians book(or sothin like that).this computer is a 1994 model......can i get any type of good sound card and graphics accellarator card.... thanx

I did not mean to offend you but they do make good keychains.

Is it a DX/2 or DX/4 chip. They ran a little faster than just a standard SX/DX? At very least it is a DX with a math co-processor...
If you are going to run a little Linux box this could handle it just fine, dont expect it to do anything really fast though...

Good for running linux without X windows (i.e. ftp/web serving/or even if you've got a home network a router/gateway to the Internet). Unfortunately a bit dated for anything much else.

Although the original Indycar should run as intended.

They make decent paper weights too! I've got one propping up the coffee table in the parlor (fancy word for the living room with the nice furniture), as the hardwood floor is a bit uneven.

They make OK linux boxes. Above someone stated that their not good for Xwindows, thats not entirely true. If the computer has enough RAM it would be fine for Xwindows. Don't mess with X with less than 16MB (although you'll see much better performance with 32 or more under X), and don't expect to do too much multi-tasking. It's important to remember that 486 were not designed with multi-tasking in mind, just windows (classic, not 9x/NT) in which only the "active /window" was truely active.

486's were good CPU's. Though, yours is an intel........

My first comp was an AMD DX/4 100. 5 years operation, until I decided to pukll it apart.

Then, I found why it was unstable, the fan, was never plugged in!

I sold the CPU a couple of months ago, whatever you do, dont do this.

I am so sad its gone, I would kill for it to come back.

talk about bringing back a thread from the dead.

I still have a P75 going to run it as an Mp3 box.

Tons of uses for a 486 DX-2

this whole thread is really bizarre, but okay... you made me laugh! i didnt realize that the thread was so old it had mold on it. i wonder if the dx chip is much better than the current palm pilot chip? i'll bet the edge goes to the palm.

man, jd - the dam dx was obsolete 5 years ago... i don't think you can run a gameboy with the thing. we're back to the era of dos and windows 3.1.

How the heck did this thread get revived anyhow? I have one of those DX-2's in an old gateway 2000 and it just wont do very much at all lol. Even with 64mb of ram it just doesnt really have what it takes to run any games that have been made in the past 5 years. Oh well, they are fun to play with.

i486-dx chip, i was wonderin what u guys think of this chip

OK, here is a direct reply to your question.

In 1992 or so, the 486 was the hottest CPU available. I never had much luck trying to overclock them. The 486DX2-66 was the most popular. It used a 33 MHz FSB and ran at 66 MHz internally. The 486 made a limited last stand with the 486DX4-100. It also used a 33 MHz FSB but ran at 100 MHz internally. It performed more or less equivalent to a 75 MHz Pentium.

When the 486 was the latest chip available, it was an excellent CPU. Your question is really meaningless now because the 486 has been clearly and dramatically eclipsed by all the chips that have followed it over the past ten years (an eternity when it comes to CPU designs). My 2.6 Gig P4 is about 100 times faster than the 486DX2-66 (Sandra Whetstone MFLOPS)

Okay, so the chips now run 8 million times faster. Hard to believe but there are still a lot of people out there who don't have a comp. My wife works in substance abuse and when some of the people get out, sometimes I'll put a box together out of what I have and give it to them. Kind of a "try to join the world" thing. I've got a few out there using 486 100's, 133's, a few 200's. Win95, word97, a cheap modem that came from a box someone threw away and a cheap isp. Put it together and they can do just about everything that we all can. Not as fast but still get it done. I agree that they're old but for me, stable is the key. The boxes I try to get out there will do one thing every time you push the button. Run. Thanks.

hey, easy does it. remember man, this is an OVERCLOCKERS FORUM. we're not making fun of people with lesser computers, but talking about dx chips here is like going to a ferrari forum and talking about 1993 geo prisms.
