View Full Version : P3 700e pissing me off!

Ok, I haven't really submitted any posts about this chip since I got it at Christmas, but my patience is wearing thin.

I have a cb0 stepping FCPGA P3 700 ON A Soyo 7VCA I've been trying to get to 933 for over a month now. I have a FOP32 GlobalWin for cooling even though I don't feel it is doing an adequate job. Temps with a couple non-intensive apps open hover around 98F. Full load jump to about 115F. This isn't what's upsetting me though.

This chip, at 133 FSB, will not even post. I start it up and the monitor goes into sleep and the hard drive light stays on. I have to reset CMOS to get it back up and running. 840MHz is about as high as it goes as far as being stable for me so far. It'll go a little higher, but is usually not a good experience after an hour or so of use.

I've tried all voltage settings, far and between, at all bus settings and it makes no difference. I've lapped the heatsink and use normal thermal grease to seat with. Would like to get some of the metallic kind but don't want to order it. Any substitutes that can be bought locally that are commendable?

My RAM is Micron PC133 CAS3...not the greatest, I know, but shouldn't hinder it as far as running it's specified speed. I have 2 7200 15GB HDD running RAID 0, one is Maxtor and the other WD, on an IWill SideRAID-66 card. SoundBlaster X-Gamer, D-Link NIC, GeForce 256 DDR, a CDROM and another CD/DVD drive. Also have 1 full-size intake fan and another FOP32 outtake fan from an older GlobaWin. 300W power supply to run it all.

Need help. Any kind. I'm considering ditching board or processor.

I'm not sure if the board is holding you back but it appears that the processor is one that won't make 933. :(

general rule: not all chips overclock the same

even if you did get a cB0 or a cC0, there's no 100% guarantee that you'll get a high speed for that stepping.

oh well...i do think it's the processor that's crap...but if i were you, i'd try overclocking that chip on an intel-based board. more reliable than via.

Yep I have to agree, it looks like its the chip. Should have ordered it from PC-NUT, they will gurantee 933+ on their chips, (CC0 fcpga/secc2)

Soyo boards are usually great for overclocking, I have the Soyo 6ba+IV BX chipset, and my cb0 fcpga(using slotket) p3-700 does 994mhz stable @1.9V

I am using generic cas 3 pc133 ram too.

Only things I can see wrong is the Chip, Videocard, be very sure the heatsink is in contact with the cpu(i.e. no plastic cover seal, JUST pure metal/thermal paste with the core of the chip)

I kinda figured since my other Celly 533 clocked so well right off the bat. I think I was just in denial.

Ah well...maybe I'll move that P3 over the my 2nd machine and try me a chip from Da Nut.

I'll have a good overclockable Celly 533 to build PC #5 with then I guess.

Had the same prolb with my cBO700 wouldnt even post @133fsb,,Till I built a water cooler! My temps were ok @ lower speeds,But once I got to 933 it was 37C and didnt like it,,Thats not that hot,,But wouldnt OC any more,Anyways I water cooled it and it went to 1050,then added a 85Watt Pelitier and its@1083!
If yours is a Slot1 email me I got something for ya

Well, I wish I could say it was a Slot 1 so you could solve my problem but alas, it's a Flip Chip.

I think I'm just going to try again with another and stick this one on my BX and build, yet another, out of the Celly 533a that will be left behind. My cheap Tyan won't even run it at the 800 it could do on this board so I lost bigtime with this processor. Ended up with two I can't overclock, but no point in sticking the Celly back in here because the 700 runs as good, if not a little better, than it did.

Screwed screwed screwed.

UPVOLTS

get it upto 1.85v or more and then see what happens

same with me only slightly different got my 700 to run at 933 at 1.75V and no more no less voltage no matter which heat sink I used. After 3 months the damn cpu can only do 840 and it is hotter than before. So for this cpu burn in does not work. I feel your pain.
My old 366 celery was the same also it use to run 560 at 2.0V and now it can only do 550 regardless which voltage setting. that is on alpha heatsink. anybody knows why these things happened.
btw I have OC more than 30 cpus so far and these phenomenons keep happening on about 10 cpu so far. My only guess is that heat and Electro migration have damage the chip somehow and it would not work at all time high speed anymore.
what do you folks experience?

Same exact problem I had with my 700e, everything the same except the board, I had a Aopen BX mobo. My goddamn adapter card was ****e so I returned it for a MSI card and tried it again. Also, I had read here that the Maxtor hdd didn't like the pci bus jacked up so much. Anyways, 848mhz isn't that bad.

Sounds like you need a good AMD product!
