I posted this question once before, but the server hard drive crashed, and the replies were lost before I could read any of them...so here we go again.

I'm considering the PIII 1ghz w/100mhz FSB (SL4BR) cCO stepping. Has anyone successfully overclocked one of these? I'm currently running an Abit BE6-II (with BIOS "UH"), with Infinion PC133 CAS-2 memory, and am running a 550E @733 with no problems whatsoever; so I know the rest of my kit is good and stable. I would just like to know if this chip is a dog before I lay down the cash for it.

Since the coppermine core typically runs out of steam around 900-1000MHz I have my doubts that they are going to overclock very well. Some are going to work better than others, but I bet the odds are really going to be poor on going much faster.

If you're going to buy a P3 1ghz you're better off getting the 133fsb chip rather than the 100fsb chip as you won't be able to oc the fsb on the 1Ghz/100 very much at all. You'll get better performance from a P3 1Ghz@133fsb than a slightly oc'd P3 1ghz@100+fsb

I think I'm definatley with Tim on this one. It's possible to buy a Thunderbird 1Gig and expect miracles, and get miracles. But I'd never buy a P3 1Ghz - I'd be scared it would run stable at base speed - let alone overclocked some.

You might want to take the route I did, especially
if you can get a good deal on a 800IIIEB chip.

Mine runs win98 stable as a rock at 150fsb/901mhz.

My guess is that other than slightly lower CPU benchmarks,
a 150mhz fsb system will give better overall performance than
one running at 100mhz. Especially if you get some ram
that likes to run cas2 at 150.....

My only problem now is that I can't OC this machine any more,
and I may have to buy a 2nd box to melt chips in now !

Im with the kid on this one! I have a 866eb @ 155fsb stable! on a a-bit BE6-11.

Sigh, I just placed a p3 1ghz cco slot 1 in my soyo 6ba+100 (BX) and even though it boots and runs windows fine, if I run any 3d app it locks almost immediately. If I put back in an 850 cbo everything is fine. This is really a pisser. I wish I would have read this thread before. I just read that cco cpu's might not be able to run on bx motherboards so watch out. I am totally crapped out right now. Maybe I just have the worlds worst p3 1ghz, but it dosen't seem likely. I guess it is back to the drawing board.

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear about your 1ghz PIII. I'm not entirely sure that the stepping is to blame though. I've seen alot of debate rage over the whole "split-plane Vcc" issue, and I think that the whole thing was contrived to sell newer motherboards. It sounds more to me like you may need to flash your BIOS to the most current version. Everyone that I have had contact with on the whole 1ghz PIII issue has told me that their processors all run fine at the speed they are rated at, and on BX boards...they just can't overclock them much. I hope you get yours running alright! Good luck!
