ok, I just got a new P3 850 chip. Goin great, and stable as at 977@1.8v (def is 1.7) - 115 fsb.

HOWEVER :)

I'm sure this chip and mobo can do better than this. This chip actually runs at 977@1.75v but will rarely reset after hours of 3dmarking.

How much can i expect from this chip?

The ram isnt the problem, it's not super good ram but it's rated at pc133 cl3, so it should do 120 with all latency timings set at 3... right?

What about burning in? how high can i run the voltage at safely? cant quite remember but i think this mobo will allow up to 2.0v on this chip. Im thinking of running 3dmark in loop with musicmatch (looping deftones :) and seti in the background for a few days. That sound like a good idea, and what voltage should i run the chip at.

Also what's the deal with the cCO and cBO ppl are going on about? Im trying to d/l sandra to check what mine is now, but it aint gonna happen (53 bytes a sec lol - from utopia warez). Is there any other way of checking whether my chip is cCO or cBO?

Cheers in advance for any help :)

Oh yea, forgot to mention. Im cooling the chip with a GlobalWin FOP32 and good heat paste, making very good contact. Chip idles at 977-1.8v @ 30deg celcius.

oh, and another thing... hehe

What's the "wire trick" i've seem some ppl talking about on this forum, sounds kinda kewl :) Something to do with getting more voltage to your chip or something right?

Oh man! no replies yet!

c'mon ppl, this is a reasonably busy board, im sure there's someone out there that can answer my questions...

Also SiSoft sandra just tole me my chip is cCO. That's good right? :)

The wire trick involves wrapping some very small wire around certain pins to make the MB think it is a different stepping, and therefore provide a different default Vcore. The actual capabilities of your chip are difficult to predict, since they are all different. If you are able to post at high speed that is a good sign, and many times getting better cooling and bumping up the Vcore a bit will get it to run fine.

Burning in the chip also seems to help in most cases. Running Seti or Prime 95 for a few days or couple weeks has made the difference for many folks.

The cc0 stepping is a later revision of the coppermine series from Intel. They have shown to be a little more cooperative to overclocking efforts. You can identify the chip type by the "S" code, using Sandra or a similar utility, WCPUID by H. Oda works as well. The cc0s will also show a little higher default Vcore from the bios. If you get 1.65v it's a cb0 if you get 1.7v it's a cc0.

Thank you Tim!

Just before i read your post, i resetted the comp to try my luck again, and whaddaya know! Comp is stable in games and windows at 1020 @ 1.95v but gets booted from 3dmark after about 5 mins. Im going to set the vcore to 2v and let it burn >:-) Dont worry, it's not idling any hotter that at 977, so with a bit of luck, after a while i may be able to go even higher :)

well, here's hoping

Cheers
