View Full Version : intel pentium III 700e, 800e, or 850e SLOT 1?? what to get?
I have an Asus p3v4x with a 667 oced to 740-750 @ 1.65v with 576mb pc 133 ram, I am looking to upgrade to a new Slot 1 cpu. My goal (like many others) is to reach 1Ghz, Now I can/will run alpha, globawin if needed, but I have wondered about the GORB also. What would you guys choose? Any here cut away the alpha p3125s so that it doesn't block one of your ram slots? I heard it can be done..
Thanks,
Mark S.
PC Nut has some slot 1 700s that are going 1GHz easily- The Alpha/GW is often the best investment you will ever make for overclocking. My experience with the orb has been poor- if they perform better than the Intel it is by a slim margin. Typically they need lapping to be worth anything because they are notorius for not being flat.

Forget intel , u may or may not get a gig with the cpu s you suggest. Its just the luck of the draw. Get an AMD 1000 thunderbird an leave intel behind. The day of the coppermine is done. Time to go beyond a gig an AMD is the only one that goes there.
The p4 is priced so far out there its not a reasonable option yet.

Have you thought of the 750,650, and 850's, these are all 100mhz versions, and gives the .5 factor...just a thought..and my list of possibilities are
SL4C7=600/100 cCO
SL4C5=650/100 " "
SL4C3=700/100 " "
SL4BZ=750/100 " "
SL4BR=1000/100 cCO....I just threw in the gig for fun..I mean if I were to get a gig, it would have to be 100mhz ver,right?
I have the PCnut cC0 slot 1 700, pretested to 959 at default voltage, stable between 145-150fsb (1.8-1.85V). Yesterday I may have `over-overclocked' it a bit (@166fsb, 1.95V) now my system refuses to be stable:( But I still highly recommend PCnut!
DocClock: I see u have a SH6 :) I cannot get my ram (256mb Mushkin Rev2) to run at 5/7. Running it at 2-2-2, 7/9 now

If you are going to try for 1Ghz, go with the 700. Much better success rate and cCO stepping. If you don't pay a little extra for pre-tested then you will be taking chance of not getting there but most will do 933. Mine is a cBO stepping wk20 and will do 933 with 1.70v but I have to use 1.90v to stay stable at 1008.
so should i get a 700e, or 800e?

Hey Mark...
For what its worth, I have a 650e Cc0 slot one on the P3V4X (nuetered version) and after burnin can run up to 975@150fsb 1.9v--there my mobo maxes out... sad, just before the magic gig
I am upgrading to a 700 Slot 1 (un-pretested, thank you) a hoping to hit 1050mhz@150fsb... I have heard and read, repeatedly, that the 700 Cc0 is the best 1Ghz contender...
Something else to consider. The P3 Coppermine-T. My current dollars are wrapped up in slot 1, but am planning to make the jump after the Talautin (.13u) core (1.5-2Ghz range) comes out this fall.
If I didn't already have the $ set aside for the 700, I might stick with my 650 and wait for the Cu-T...
Just my .02¢
Good Luck!

I seem to remember the 256mb chips not as stable as the 128 ones...are you ready for rev3? I know I am..looking for stability at 960

The Mushkin rev3 seems to be the best...hands down.

I read here a few months back that the 800e did not automatically reach 1ghz. There were some people posting with definate no's with their rigs, and understandibly cursing with the futility of it. So from reading the many successful msgs and my own experiences I would say that the 700e is a marvel of technology.
Well everyone, thanks. It looks like I will be going with a slot 1 700e, I am gonna call around, and see if they will tell me if it is cCo. Well anyway, Here's another question.....Right now I have a p3 667 oced to 750@1.75v. (which is 150mhz fsb) Does this mean that all the stuff I got in my computer SHOULD do 150mhz fsb with a p3 700e ...if i can get the cpu that high? (which would be 1050). And anyone have a heat-sink that they would recommend for a slot 1 700e ocing to 1050mhz? (THIS CANNOT TAKE UP A RAM SLOT!!!)
Thanks to all posters!
Mark
Well, it depends on what motherboard u r using. I have no problems using the Alpha 3125 on Abit SH6, Abit BX6-R2, and Soyo 6VCA
I have an asus p3v4x, the alpha would take a up a slot. so what should i get?

if you have the p3v4x does your version have 4 slots for the RAM? I have the "A" version and it has 4, also you don't have to have a chip in the first slot. I have 2 128,b chips one in the second one in the third. No problems, also I didn't have to cut my alpha to get it to fit. I just sold a second machine with the exact same setup and the memory chip inthe first slot cleared the alpha without any cutting (it was really colse but it made it). My question is how many Mem stick do you plan to use? If its 3 or less just silde them over one slot.
I have all 4 slot banks filled. 128+128+128+256= 576mb pc 133 ram. Now I have heard that I can cut an Alpha, anyone try this before? What are some other good HSF's that do not take up a ram slot??

Have you considered a 700fcpga with a slotket? I can use all mem slots with this setup and a Alpha PEP66. It is clooooosssseeee. ;-) Actually the Alpha just barely touches the 1st slot. I did read somewhere that they were trimming the sink fins and Alpha case to clear the first mem slot with P3125. The P3125 is about 3mm larger than the PEP66. :'(

PEP66 is fcpga and is not designed for a Slot 1. It is one of the best air coolers made though. My temps average 32C full load with a calibrated internal diode reading. Get 26C idle with my case temp running at 21-23C which is almost the same as room temps. Check out 2cool store site for some info on sizes and cooling test. http://www.2cooltek.com/

A freind of mine used a hack saw to mod his alpha (P3-125) for his BE6 2 ver1, and he said it was easy, and it looks good...if you can move your arm back and forth, then this mod is a brease...and you can cut only what is needed...and if you don't like the fresh cut look, then just waste a fat felt tip marker to repaint the fins and make it look professional try 3dfxcool.com for a slot 1 alpha
