When Windows loads, it uses the registry (a database of program settings) to set everything up. When it detects errors in the registry data it uses a duplicate copy kept as a backup to load the system. Overclocking can cause the registry data to become corrupt over time, in many cases due to the HDD controller generating errors that are not catastrophic by themselves, but tend to accumulate. It can mean that an overclocked system may not be as stable as it seems.
