Got PIII 600 @ 800 right now. Only has GoldenOrb cooling it. Temperatures read 35C at idle at 37-38C at full load. I want to OC it to 950+ and was wondering if i need to give it more cooling or if the Orb will do.

Try it- just watch the temps. There's no way to know otherwise, since these chips vary tremendously from unit ot unit.

I'm getting one of these chips soon. I'm looking forward to a side by side comparison of the 600 Celeron and the 600E P III.

the Celery is running 945. I'll be happy w/ 800 from the P III. That will be better than the Celeron at the faster MHz, because of the larger L2.

I should be getting the chip in a week or so, and this is my 1st PIII. Anything I should be aware of, as I embark on the next adventure??

BTW, Tim, great quote. I love the "spoken" part in "Sheep", where "thru quiet reflection the lowly ones shall rise up, and then we'll make the bugger's eyes water" Used to play "Pigs on the Wing I & II when I had an acoustic guitar.

Mr B- Thanks

I can't think of anything that will be much different with the PIII except the performance. When I first went to a 1GHz PIII from a 900 MHz Celermine I wasn't impressed with the difference. Nowadays when I go back to the Celermine I'm annoyed waiting on it.

Yes the p3 600 is the faster cpu, you'll have lots more fun with it. I'm sick of hearing about crippled cache and neutered memory.

I have past experience with that let me tell you. I owned an Amd k6-2, a cel433a and 700E, on the video side I have owned the TNT2 M64, Matrox G400 16M and the Geforce2 MX which I currently own. I'm a sucker for punishment I guess.

Btw, you will need a bigger and better hs/f if you want to do more than what you have now.

I agree with Tim, in you will need a lot more cooling, my 600e gets a little testy @ 37-38c, I would strongly suggest an Alpha, it's what I use, and it was the best $50.00 I spent. I hear Global Win makes a pretty good setup, I've never tried one...but the gorb is only adequate for "mild" clocking which is around 800mhz with the 600e...any more than that, and it's Alpha time.
Good luck with your new PIII, I hope it does as much for you as mine has done for me :-)

I got this one @ e-BAY too...........

I was browsing for another C II when I saw a listing for a "Celeron 600E". Know I KNOW there's no such animal as a C II 600 "E", so I opened up the listing.......

Damned if it wasn't a P III.......for $75.00!! HOLY COW!!!

Just got an e-mail from the guy, he's gonna honor it. He said he was very tired when he listed it. I guess!

Thats gonna make $50 for an Alpha an easy choice......

Lighting does strike twice......I'm expecting another 600 Celeron in the mail mid-week. Got this for $56.00.

Had the guy e-mail me the numbers on the chip......damned if it ain't a cC0......

Wish I could have the same luck finding a Soyo 6BA+IV or BE6 II...............*sigh* I'd ditch this VIA 133 chipset in a New York heartbeat.

I have a BF6- the same as the BE6 without the HighPoint controller. It's a great OC MB and my 700 cb0 is running at 1050 and has been running for months 24/7 as a server without rebooting. They are often available retail for around $90, and if you haunt Ebay you can probably get one much cheaper. Of course you will need a slotket.

Is the BF6 ATA66 compatable? I thought that only supported ATA 33??

the BF6 is ATA33 only but the ATA66/100 drives are backwards compatible. =)

btw...if you have a cB0 600E, you should be running at least 900. if you don't have much money to spend, get a GlobalWin FKP32/FOP32. cheap cooler and just as good as the alpha.

my 600E was a slot 1 cA2 so i kinda maxed out at 840-852. but that was fast enough for me...now i have a 650E@910...still want more...heheheheheeh...

Mr B,
I would just get the BF6 and pick up a Promise Ultra66 controller card. You could probably get the Promise card for about $15-20.

Also, the forums at Anandtech is a pretty good place to pick up used hardware. Most of thej people there are pretty cool to work with and trustworthy: http://forums.anandtech.com/categories.cfm?catid=45
