Alrighty, I want to know what people think is the best game ever.
Guidelines: created 1995 or later , and is for the PC
Judge based on all aspects of the game, not just graphics or realism or any one thing. Plot, gameplay, music, the whole kit and kaboodle.

Tough to name just 1. Here is a good list of some games though:
Duke Nukem 3d
Half-Life (and it's mods like Counter-Strike)
Command & Conquer Series
Battlefield 1942
Diablo 2
Those are pretty much my favorite PC games since 1995. There are a few others too but I can't think of them right now. Out of that list I'd say my top 3 are Diablo 2, Command & Conquer games, and Counter-Strike.

nb, nb at all (nb=not bad), battlefield 1942 was a good call, I'm going to add my own: Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn. Hours and hours of gameplay, and the plot is like reading a book without actually having to spend time reading a book. I give it two thumbs up, but I'll give you the last word, your thoughts please?

Tough choice, but I think that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater/Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2/Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Quake/Quake II/Quake III Arena, Half Life/CounterStrike, Sanitarium, & Hitman: Codname 47 are defintely up there, :)

Half Life, IMO original beats all mods and all other games, but then again there are a lot of great RPG I've never played.

Nomad was the greatest game of all time. Could possibly be pre-1995 though.
Found a link: http://old.the-underdogs.org/v2/game.php?id=774
Its pretty impressive that it gets 8.84 out of 10 though. Too bad it was 1993. It was essentially morrowind in space. You could trade, buy things, and travel anywhere. Join alliances, make friends and enemies. Ahh, those were the days. To be 6 years old again.

edit: Screeny. Anyone remember it yet?

edit 2: Its abandonware now. Here's a D/L link. http://www.bhlegend.com/php/download.php3?id=406&mirror=0 If you haven't played it, play it now. You will be hooked. Your votes for the best game will be changed. And you won't use any CPU or graphics power while playing it. :D

Stronghold
Though I liked the sequel Stronghold Crusader Better, it did not have as strong of story line as Stronghold did.
Stronghold has Excellent Graphics, And a Sound Score that can be downloaded as an MP3 since it was requested so much by players.
Gameplay is great, Unit Balance is fantastic. and realism can be found.
This is an RTS/Castle SIM game, And I would defiantly have to put it at the top of the list if One must consider all of the listed Criteria.
If I was to pick My Favorite game, it would be a toss up between Age of Empires 2: Age of Conquerors Expansion and Stronghold Crusader. with Honourable Mention to Half life.

Battlefield 1942 is the only game I've actually continued playing for over a year now - short and simple: it's the ****. Graphics are awesome, online gameplay is perfect. There are so many aspects to the game it's unbelievable. More FPS like BF1942 needa come out.

Its a tough call, but i have to say Half-Life with the speakers turned up and the lights turned down was a heck of a game, it really made me feel like i was there myself.

Fallout, Fallout 2, No One Lives Forever, Interstate '76, or Planescape: Torment. Honorable mention goes to Grand Prix Legends, for being the only game that I have had for 5 years and not gone more than a month without playing.
Half-life, BF1942, and Baldur's Gate. RTCW was a lot of fun, too

No one's mentioned Deus EX, easily one of the best games ever. One of the oldest games still loaded on the computer and not sitting on the shelf. How they screwed the sequel so bad is beyond me. That and Half-Life get my vote (though they'll probably scew up that sequel too).

As far as I am concerned Thief: The Dark Project and Half Life are pretty much tied for top billing. Although Panzer General will always hold a place in my heart as I never have that not installed (but it is pre-95 I am pretty sure). Always fun to fire it up and play another campaign to take over the world.
Counterstrike, Half life, Doom

Deus Ex! I'm glad at least one person remembered how right it was that JC Denton is a monotone emotionless killing (or not) machine.
Otherwise, Call of Duty! I still haven't finished it, but it rocks. I wonder who will win in the end... I sure hope not the nazis! ;-)
Third choice... StarCraft. I find myself installing it every 4 or 5 months, just long enough so my old Battle.Net account was deleted for inactivity, and I have to start over. Oddly, I never finished any except the Terran single player missions.
<---- *Points to Avatar*
Putting Half-Life aside, Starcraft at the time made me eat, sleep and breathe the game. I sometimes lost my mind and went crazy... me and myself would have arguments at what would be a great strategic aproach to things... o_O
But thats just me
Half-Life though, at the time i would CRAP my pants somtimes 'cause i got so into it. It kept the washer busy and the dirty basket full hehe (j/k) :D (looks forward to HL2)
Well, I'm a quake III guy myself but maybe I need to try some new games :D
Peace,
BalliN
Half-life
Morrowind

Best 3 games ever in my opnion.

Command and Conquer is pretty good game. If you like nascar racing games i would highly suggest the NASCAR Raving Series. they feature great graphics and accurate car details. It is also very realistic with cars being able to flip over.

And let's not forget the original Unreal and how unreal it was. Who could forget the lights clicking out one by one in the hallway as the skarrj busts out of the wall. Talk about pooping one's pants!
i would have to say
BF1942
Freelancer same as freespace but bigger and better
StarWars Knights of the old republic
Need For Speed Underground
Lord of the Rings Return of the king
GTA Vicecity
To name but a few

This is really one of those questions that probably should be seperated into two categories. Single player games and Multi-player games. Some games have excellent single player games and no multi (or horrible multi) while others have great multi player but no or horrible single player game.

Good point,
I see many people post StarCraft, which on the single player side sucked, I am an RTS player to the bone, StarCraft is great Multiplay, but single play lacks story line, graphics are not to grand, nor is the music score anything special, those are things that matter in Single Play games, but Multiplay, Speed of loading is and always has been great, ease of connection to other players, fantastic with battle.net, learning curve very short, you can pick up the game andbe decent in a 15 minutes, so long as you don't compare your self to the players who have every strat for every map memorized.... but that will get me off on another tangent.

Yeah, Tribes 2 doesn't have any single-player either, but IMO has the best multi-player i've ever seen in a game.
