May sound like an odd topic but i need help. I have a gateway 500 with a Pentium III 500 SECC2. I bought a 933mhz PIII and my computer wont boot with it. I start the computer, i get a series of beeps and nothing. Both Gateway and Intel are no help. My mother is a Talon III. The latest BIOS i am using says that it supports 800mhz PIII. So, somebody suggested that i underclock the 933mhz. My question is, how? I am a newbie at this and not sure what everything means. Thank you.

obviously your mobo does not support cpu higher than 800MHz. Also your 933 cpu requires 133 FSB to run at stock speed which you would need PC133 ram and 133FSB mobo. Also your mobo does not support over or under clock for that matter. If you want to keep the cpu just buy a new mobo and PC133 ram. Or you can sell the cpu thru ebay.
I would build a new computer if I were you.

P3 933 does not require to have PC133 RAM and mobo to make it work at 933mhz. You can very easily run @133mhz fsb and up on a PC100 RAM and many of the mobos with 100mhz bus can do 133mhz very easily.
Abit BE6-2 mobo for example, it meant to run at 100mhz bus but im running it at 152mhz.

JCronic, at least couple of possible problems you're having are:

1. Your mobo may not support higher clocked CPU than specified. your mobo probably not co-operating with the new CPU speed. It's possible if you some how manage to flash your BIOS on your mobo and if and only if new flash will enable your mobo to support higher clock multipliers. The odds are it will not work.

2. Check your voltage. Even if you manage to flash your mobo, you'll have to make sure the Vcore voltage is set accordingly for the new CPU. The default CPU voltage is written on the top part of the plastic cover of your CPU cartridge.

your mobo maybe designed to work with the factory P3 500mhz processor and it's not gonna be easy to try to overwrite it. That is probably why both Intel and Gateway weren't much help since they dont tech support on putting higher clocked CPU on your particular factory mobo. You see what Im getting at?.. I don't know.. but Tim,.. or anybody else have objection to this or correct me on anything I said, please speak up. This is my best educated guss i could make.
