When you take out a cdrom drive whilst thine computer is on? Will Windows freakout or will it shutdown? Nothing?

you can get special hardware designed for switching out drives on the fly like in some laptops...

Oh I'm doing some video encoding but I need to remove my cdrom and floppy drives for some modding reasons. So its "ok" to do. What about pluggin it back in? Does it even work?

sometimes u can plug em back in fine, but other times you might have to restart....video encoding requiers removing drives? what exactly are you doing? jus a lil curious

you could try hibernating your system (shutdown option). I THINK it will resume your encoding when you turn the system back on. Just make sure you connect everyting like it was before when you turn it on, no missing drives.

Ummmm, plugging drives back in while the PC is on is probably not a very good idea. I could see sparks and fried componenets coming out of the deal.

Hate to admit it but I've done it enough to suggest, when removing unplug the power first, then the ide cable, when installing reverse order, plug in the ide cable first then the power. To the best of my knowledge I've never killed anything doing this. I ussualy only do this when trouble shooting or setting up minimulistac settups for my seti farm.

ROFL. No no no I was encoding some video and it was taking a long time. I wanted to finish my mods (drive stealthing) while it was doing it. Ya when I put the drives back in my computer froze. I'll try the ide then power next time. Thx.

Mabye if I was encoding in Huffy on a 2 gig harddrive would I need to take or add some drives but.... nope. Just a normal divx encode. Got to do 2 things at once.

I've done it, and every time the computer locks up until I restart, but that's it.

Same here, lock up every time. I don't imagine that it would fry but it might.
