View Full Version : Problem with chipping the core?

Ive been a little worried lately because i just built a VERY budget system for my brother and the cpu i put in was an amd athlon t-bird 900...it came out of an old compaq fom years back and it was in the first ever pc i ever built, and needless to say, there was some frustration of putting the heatsink on it, and things werent very pretty, so after all these years of wear and tear, the core of the cpu has goten pretty chipped (but not cracked)
is there a problem with chipping the core? i mean..it is just a piece of metal right, or the other way around and all the architecture of the chip is built into the raised die?
i woulkd also like to know because i barely chipped my 1800 (in sig) and at the time, it really pis*ed me off...
anybody have info on this?

i don't think that's very healthy. yeah, the top of the core is just a piece of metal, but the way everything's packed into a modern processor, you proally nicked something. even if you didn't, it's going to be really tough to cool, since a lot of the heat transfer is proally not going to work anymore.

on IDLE the athlon 900 is at 52c i think..thats pretty crazy, and ive got very good airflow in the case for my bro, 1x 120mm intake, 1x92mm blowing on cpu, 1x80mm exhaust, psu modded so fan blows full blast exhaust, id sya this case has somedamn good airflow, but i guess the heatsink just sucks i bet...its the powercooler PCH075H (http://www.mikhailtech.com/articles/heatsinks/pch075h/)
Depends where you chip the core... you might not have got anything important... but that raised die is just a piece of silicon... no metal there, all the tiny circuits are right in there and one chip can kill it, but looks like you got lucky.

ive been using socket a procs since socket a came out. i currently own in the neighborhood of 5 pally's, 6 tbreds, 1 barton, and 4 tbirds and ive yet to chip or crack a core. i swap procs and heatsinks all the time.
its all about even pressure, laying things flat, and making sure you have room to work. (like taking the power supply out to have easy access to the clip) removable motherboard trays help too.

the case i have (chenbro gaming bomb) is VERY small, about 1 drive bay off of a mini-tower.... the mobo and psu are about 1 inch apart, i have to take out the psu everytime i want to work on/around my cpu or heatsink...quite annoying
but yeah, ive been putting heatsinks on and building comps long enough that i have gotten pretty good and putting the heatsink and not messing stuff up, thx neways
and u have that many palominos? i say ebay em, and sell it to some un-suspecting joe that thinks its a t-bred or something...

why is the temp on the tbird so high, and i know you have good cooling in there.

id say a few things,
1) the core is chipped, so heat transfer isnt as efficient as it could be
2) the heatsink on this thing well, sucks, it just sucks, no other words to describe it (maybe crap)
3) its a t-bird, and they run VERY hot, 50c is like the norm

fine fine fine, all i can say is its trash, oh god jerry its trash. sucks how it got shiped. i think it could have occured if you removed the processor while it was still hot. I doubt its because of you putting the HS on corrects or flat because you're careful with what you do.

removed the processor while it was still hot? how would that make a difference? i sed in my first post that i chipped it from not installing the heatsink correctly and smashing it around when i built my first computer

relax my mistake. i guess you suck at working with comps (only built 2 computers) and im glad i didnt let you near mine.

wat are u talking about...i put on the HS, lapped it, and put AS5 on, plus we did the wiring together....and i messed up the HS installation when i was like 13..and had no prior experience in building comps, so why are u glad that ididnt build urs? the ones i recently built are running perfectly fine...i didnt mess nethinbg up

This isn't a very nice thread.

Do I have to get a mod in here or something like that? (j/k:p )
