I would like to know how too, if you guys aren't just annoyed at being asked. I just found this site and I don't know much about overclocking yet. So, I will be reading through this forum for the next few weeks (at least) to learn everything I can.
But, I couldn't resist asking... this topic is exactly what I'm trying to do: Overclock this old gateway computer which happens to be a Pentium II 400.
So, is anyone in a friendly enough mood today to at least point us in the right direction about overclocking these old computers?
First, you need a motherboard that has BIOS adjustments (FSB, memory ratios/timings, voltages, etc.) that will allow overclocking. I'm sorry to say that most OEM computers (including Gateway, Dell, HP, Compaq, etc.) will typically NOT allow overclocking. The last resort would be software such as softFSB (a free download), but I would not hold your breath.

Whats the model number? I think I had that same PC untill my graphic card (voodoo banshee) friend the whole thing and gateway replaced it with a 450 P2 and 128 mb of ram instead of 64....
4.5 year old thread?? *chuckle*

why in the world would you want to overclock a 400mhz chip... for one your'e lucky if you make it to 500.. and you can get a slot one 600 cartridge for like 20 bucks! ... and thats all slow anyway!
or just to say youre overclocking from very very very slow to just very very slow ?

Some people like to tweak just to tweak.
Anyone remember the 66-->100Mhz FSB mod for PII's? I tried that on a 350 and it didn't really work all that well. I have an old PII 233 that'll run at 266 though :P

Instead of overclocking the 400mhz, get a Slocket and a Tualatin celeron 1.3ghz. A 300% increase vs. 12%-15%. Be sure to check the compatibilty list link.

After that try using SoftFSB (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download434.html) or CPUFSB (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=420) to oc the 1.3. :)
Find instructions to ID the PLL here (http://www.cpufsb.de/FSB.HTM).
