I stealthed my CDRW drive today, and I redid my DVD stealth job today. Turned out pretty nicely, I need to order a new cover for the front because I scratched the DVD drive cover...but other than that, it looks pretty good IMO. I also removed my floppy, because it is useless.

Let me know what you think. I am in the process of a rheobus transplant, thats why the one that is installed is not in the right space, I am going to transplant the whole thing to a lian li front cover, on both of my rheobus'. The normal ones that are there have a horizontal grain, and it is much shinier than the lian li cases, so I want to make it look a lot cleaner than the sunbeam covers do.

How did you hook up the opening of the trays? did you make it so that you can push on the covers? or do you just open them through windows?

I put a small piece of velcro right where the button is, so i just tap on the corner, and it opens. works quite well, no problems with catching or anything. the whole thing is attached with velcro, turned out it was the perfect size, and its not going to be moving anytime soon, so the velcro works quite well.

and no, DVD is at the top, CD-RW is 3rd from the top.

I just got done with the first of two rheobus transplants, and it went pretty well. it really makes the front look smoother, and more together. I am going to do the 2nd probably tonight, or tomorrow, so I will have pics for that as soon as it is done.

Closeup on the new one.

Shot from above. I have no problems with weight on the rheobus, it does not sag or anything.

In this one you can see the differences between the two bay covers. Wow.

I will not be putting LED fans or CCFL fans in my case because I would not be able to turn off the LEDs, or turn off the CCFLs. I sleep in the same room as my comp, so I must be able to get rid of as much light as possible (which I can with my current parts)

ANYWAY. Here goes Update #2. I just finished the 2nd rheobus, and it turned out even better than the first one (generally how things go with modding). I will take some pics later of what I used for the process, basically some of the general dremel tools. fiberglass reinforced cutting discs, tiny ball cutter that looks like a drill bit, cone shaped drill, and a high grit sanding cone. Along with one of my brothers socks (clean of course) so that I did not scratch the surfaces, and of course a clamp and glasses (a must whenever using a dremel)

So here are the pics.

Here is from back a foot or so.

AHH, ITS SO BRIGHT! This is with all of the rheostats on high (blue LEDs) along with my two new SVC cathodes on.
http://www.alterahosting.com/~bloody/rangerjoe/Computer%20Pics/invisible/stealth_rheobus18.JPG

That is all for now. Once I get the new sleeving and heatshrink, I am going to redo some of the cables, but this is all I have for now.

I was never really interested in painting the trays actually....i hardly ever open my cd drives

i came up with a few mods that might look pretty cool, so i will keep you all updated as things turn up.

Nice joob

Wish I could stealth mine, kind of hard with a clear case though

WyrmMaster

actually with a bit of modding you can hook up LED fans so the lights are on a switch and the fan is on a seperate switch or rehobus. BUT... atleast this happened with mine... the LEDs died fairly quickly setup like this. I dont know if it was a result of the mod, or just crappy fans / LEDs though. But at this point i am going more for quiet than for shiny... so i got 3 panaflos to replace my ex LED fans with. More air for less noise seems like a good trade off to me.

LED fans do look damn cool though...

it makes your case look VERY clean. I want a big case so I can have all that extra air room. looks very very pretty!

RangerJoe
01-06-04, 11:06 PM
Heh, funny you mention the extra room. I have so many fans in the case, I'm sure all of the air is circulated every second or so.

Anyway. Thanks for all of the positive comments, and I hope to see more stealthing soon, because it is a really neat project.

LOL.

I may not have an extremely fast comp, but I can wire my case with the best of them....not quickly of course, I took a few hours to get it to where I like it, and I am always seeing stuff I want to fix, or make less visible. Once I find some Lian Li scrap alum, I will get it a lil better, I have some fun ideas to further clean the case...so hopefully I can start that soon.

Thanks again for the comments :p

And what case do you have? Did it come with that area for fans above the PSU or did you mod that in?

I know how that feels once you start those wires you didn't notice before become the most visible things in you case. The worst thing about hiding wiring is using uv stuff is you worked so hard to hide but you still wan't to see it glowing. Oh well time to break out the uv paint.

RangerJoe
12-27-04, 02:44 PM
i dont have anything done in UV, but ill look for some pictures of the wiring setup.

my old case was the PC-75, it had two 80mm fan holes above the power supply, but i cut the grills out to help with airflow

i now have the updated lian li full tower, the V2000B.

3M double sided sticky tape works very well also, same idea as velcro basically.

I like how you were able to leave the face of the drive on with the stealth mod. I completed the same mod, but the front of my drive is completely open when the tray is ejected.

Software compliments, which are just as sweet as the mod itself:

Here is a nice little tool to accompany a stealth mod - Wizmo (http://grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm). It supplies several very useful functions for ejecting and closing your CD tray.

Here are some tips about how this tool operates. Download Wizmo and place it in your windows/system32 directory. No installation is required, just press windows+r and type wizmo open and hit enter, your CD drive will pop out; press windows+r again and type wizmo close then hit enter. Now go to your desktop and right click, select new, select shortcut - type "wizmo open" for file location (just those two words, no directory or anything), and name the shortcut whatever you want (like eject) then hit finish - now double click on your shortcut and the cd tray will pop out.

If you have multiple disk drives, use wizmo close=x or open=x, where x stand for the drives letter.

Now download this tool - StrokeIt (http://www.tcbmi.com/strokeit/downloads.shtml). Install the program and run it. When configured correctly in combination with wizmo, ejecting your cd tray can be accomplished by simply right clicking and drawing a simple gesture. I figured this out myself as its basically simple, but instructions are below.

Double click on the icon in the tray to open the command editor, and right click on "global actions" and create new action. Click on the drop down menu towards the bottom right to select "right" then click on the add gesture button. Now right click on the name of this action you just created and select new command - click on the drop down menu and select run program. In the file box browse to windows/system32 and select the wizmo file. In the arguments field type open, and in the run box below that select normal window - you can just close that window. Now right click and drag your mouse to the right a bit and release. Your CD tray will open. The same can be done for closing the tray.
