Hi

I've got a P3 1000 mhz with a Golden Orb cooler. In windows it is running at 38 C and when I start gaming it hits 60 C. But it's running stable.
I've tryed running it @ 1100 mhz. In windows it hits 40 C and still 60 C, when gaming, but still stable. When I take the cover of it drops to 53 when gaming and 35 in windows. This is to hot isn't it? Whats the Ideal temp for a P3 1000 mhz and what can I do to obtain it?
I've got no extra cooling in the casing but is planing to install an extra fan.

Thanx
Moose

well i personally believe 60c is the max (mines @53c full load) with some simple air cooling (blowhole, large intake fan(s) nice exhauster by the video card you shoud drop a few degrees(OpenFridays Estimate drop 5-10c-system temp) i would if i were you personally get an exhauster for the pci slot next to your video card. (when im gaming thats the hot spot) well use some, all, none of my ideas either way.......p.s. i like to have more air comming into the case than leaving the case. thats just my opinion

just reread your post...GOLDEN ORB!!!??? well you may want to lap it if you havent done so...or better yet buy a better cooler......i think youd see a more drastic jump in temps if you got either an alpha-pal or pep or the contravercial fop-38 (if you dont mind noise thats your hsf)

The ORB is a pretty crap cooler. Your temps do seem quite high. The Intel spec sheets I think say that 70 degrees C is the max for the chip. Most P3 's run at around 25 - 35 degrees C, obviously depending on the cooler and o/c. When I used the intel fan on my P3 800 it ran at around 42 degrees C and went down to around 27 when I switched to the Alpha.

No I haven't done anything to the Orb. Whats the trick?
Whats the excacte name of that Alpha cooler. I can't seem to find anywhere in any (danish) online computer stores. Is the Alpha noisy?

the "trick" is to "lap" it that is to sand it down so it is even. and the alpha pep or alpha pal souldnt be hard to find...alpha's are some of the most common coolers. and its not the alpha that would be noisy it would be your fan choice for the cooler. in general i dont find alpha's to be all that noisy. dont know of any danish sites but they have both the alpha and the fop-38 here

http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/1/cat1.htm?129 i dont know if they ship to wherever it is you live though.

If you want a quiet cooler the alpha pep66 w/ ystech fan is a real good combination. And ditch the orb. They are ok for low mhz chips but the p3 1gig run hot. You really need something with more cooling area. Get some artic silver 1 or 2 as well.

One more thing...case cooling will make a big difference as well. Do you have good airflow in your case? At least two high cfm fans (not counting the psu fan) is the minimum. I like having the slot cooler and probably getting a bay cooler some time soon.

Is it a P3 slot type or socket?

They sell for both types and ship intl.

I let my p3-1g@1200 get to 55C for 5 minutes to try to burn it in and I lost ground my 1g used to be 1248 now 1230 is the best i can do with 1.9cv. I read some specs that said 60C was max for our chips so I would definatly get that thing cooler for your own sake.
good luck, theres quite a bit you can do for free that will improve your temps as the other post have said lapp your heatsink if you can even before you get another one, [dont want to fry your chip] if you cant get arctic silver use radioshack compound, you can also put a duct from your processor to the case so that your heatsinkfan [HSF] draws cool air straight to the chip. I found some old heatsink fans from other processors and i cut them down to fit my northbridge and my videocard. The case fans you need are only ten bucks a piece get one in front pulling air in and one in back pulling air out. happy overclocking
