'Cause if the Klingons destroy your primary PSU*, you can still operate off your secondary.

I think that the only reason for doing this is to save money and use an old PSU for the drives instead of buy a bigger PSU for everything.

most people usually use a second power supply to run there fans lights maybe watercooling pumps.

or they use the second power supply (usually a special one) to run a tec or cold plate.
