View Full Version : Pentium 4? is it possible?
I am new at over clocking and I currently have a penutim 4 1.4 ghz. I don't want to be the first to try this since this will be my first attempt.

Not all that many folks have hand's-on with the P4's. Personally, I wouldn't try to OC it. I mean, the QIII frame rate is amazing--why mess with success?

Hi the post above is totally right !! Why do you want to overclock it ? is it to slow or what?. You got one of the fastest system . Keep away from overclocking because there isn't much info on overclocking a PIIII.
Have FUN !!
I DON'T want to over clock it..I am just curious to know the potential of my system....Maybe 2ghz! that would be cool :) I don't want to over clock I am just curious to know what you guys think might be possible...

Heck ya, kick it. Were all behind ya but were gona catch up as soon as prices drop. Your chip is certainly one to have at the moment. So kick the frontside bus up if ya can an c where it goes. Then come back an tell us. Dont worry about breaking it its guaranteed. Its not gona break anyway, so kick the heck out of it.

Check this article out on Sharky: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/articles/p4_oc_special/ .
They get theirs up around 1.8G, and didn't seem to break much of a sweat doing it. Basically, these puppys have some serious headroom.
I like their comment, though, that "our favorite overclocking method comes from AMD and a #2 pencil".

motherboards are thin on the ground, the most common are the ASUS one and then there's one by the original fartknockers intel.
The ASUS boards are great for the job, but the intel ones (although configurable at this sketchy phase) are not as user friendly.
1.7 - 1.8 is a reasonable estimate of speed.
I'm thinking of getting P4 when DDR and Via chipsets grace the new 0.13 model - until then - no way Jose

I agree with Warduck...kik it..kik it good, I wouldn't worry about ruining the chip, as long as you have good cooling, and I also dissagree with the guy waiting for DDR, as the bench marks will bear out the advantages of rambus ram in the P4..I'm sure they will implement ddr support, but I also don't think the scores will be as good for ddr as rdram...although hand picked ddr modules might give rdram a run fo' the money either way, I'm waiting for the next smaller die size chip to come out...by then I'll be ready for a P4...but at that time, I will get the biggest they make, or the smallest

Of course it is possible, any o/cing is possible, just to prove it i got my old 486 dx2 66 to 80 about a month ago, and hasn't turned off yet. Got my p133 to 180, and my Celeron ii 700 to 877. You can definelty get that chip to 1.8ghz - 2.0ghz. Get a good ass fan tho, don't want to mess anything up. Doin't for get to up the voltage as you increase your fsb.
