View Full Version : Overclock DON'T laugh...P166Mhz
Can it be done, should it be tried, and what gain is possable, and how do I start, and please don't tell me start, by buying a faster computer lol ,this is for a kid in the neighborhood and he doesn't have the money to upgrade. Please help if you can thanks.
I have a P166 running at 200MHz- never had much luck going faster but it seems stable enough. I think I just changed the multiplier as I recall. (It's been running as an MP3 server for a while) You just have to find the jumpers on the MB and play around with different clock speed/multiplier combinations until you get the fastest stable one.

Moved post to "Intel CPUs"
i had a P150@200. it ran pretty stable. get a decent heatsink/fan and use some heatsink compound and it should be fine
Thank you ,to all who replied i will give it a shot.

I have my p166 mmx at 233, I had to change the multiplier to 3.5x, and increase the cpu voltage to 2.9V, works great and sollid as a rock.
I would go faster, but the board's max multiplier was 3.5x, and the bus limited to 66mhz,
Good Luck.

If you have a cpu with a ceramic- or even an early plastic (MMX) housing, you just might be able to adjust both the multiplier and the bus speed. Be careful though! I had a P200MMX running 262 (3.5x75) with a big fan and at a high voltage and eventually fryed the mobo (I think it was the BIOS) the cpu itself still was ok on another mobo...
I once had a 166MMX, at 233MHz with a big ass cooler that looked like it was off a Pentium pro or something! Easy job, change the multiplier to 3.5, it ran @ 2.8v (default). My maxtor HD sometimes didn't like a higher FSB so I left that alone.
Some 166's had locked multipliers though, so that of course means FSB overclocking only.
On an old Soyo mobo of my friends, said chip did 266MHz @ 2.9v. I was quite proud :)

providing your 133 isnt locked, 166mHz
remember a few years back when remarking CPU's became very common, the 133 was being turned to a 166 and then remarked, so Intel locked alot of 133's....
modified as i cant type :)
