What does it mean when the buffer is underrun? After burning the disk with that error, the disk doesn't work at all. Thanks.

Buffer underrun means that there wasnt enough data going to the burner and the burner's data then recieved nothing and started to burn nothing. Newer burners now a days have buffer underrun prevention, which in short uses memory to remember exactly where it left off after there was a buffer underrun and then start up again at the spot where it stop right after its buffer is filled again.

A few reasons why you may have gotten a buffer underrun error would be because u might have been doing something on your cpu while trying to burn a cd. this then takes the computers attention away from ur burning process and the data wanting to be burnt then slowly starts to slow down its sending to the burner, untill eventual, there is nothing left for teh burner to burn.

hope i didnt confuse u too much:D

Back again guys and with a even more serious problem. I noticed that when i play the CD after burning it at 12x, there are many pops in the background and it's really irritating. Can someone help me out on what to do? I'm using Memorex brand media if that helps and a Khypermedia 48x24x48 burner.

I don't think data ever stops going to the disc, it just slows the burning speed down.

try burning it slower or faster. your burner may be inaccurate at this speed. if that doesn't work, try different brand of cdr's

as far as buffer underrrun: this is achieved when the burner runs out of data to put on the cd... empty buffer, or in other words, buffer underrun. this can be solved with buffer underrun protection, which comes as a standard feature in 99% of the new burners.

basically, when you burn, try not to use any harddrive-intensive programs, so that the data can flow smoothly to the burner.

hope this helps,
Filip

I solved the buffer underun problem though. Now my problem is that i tried burning the CD (music) and now i hear popping/cracking sounds in the background. It doesn't even make these noises when i play the mp3's on my computer either.

A Few things might be wrong with the CD or the burner.

First off, it could be a bad batch of media? try burning to different brand of CD's. If the poping and cracking stops, then you know it was the CD media. If it doesnt stop, then the problem probably doesnt lie within the CD Media.

Second of all, it could be te burner. It could be that your CD Laser is dieing on you or maybe its just dust within the burner. You can try cleaning the burner with a store boughten self cleaning kit. If that doesnt work, then maybe your Laser is starting to die out. If this is the case, i would take your burner to the manufacturer, and let them take a look at it. MY first ever burner was a yamha 8*4*24, and after a few months and only a few burns, the Laser had died, and i took it to Yamaha's warehouse ( which is convieniently located near me ) and they plugged it into a machine, ran a few tests, and told me exactly what was wrong with it. In my case, the laser had died because supposedly, i didnt burn enough media when i first got it.......

Third of all, it could be the burning software that you are using. You can either try different software or you can do a reformat and install everything cleanly.

Fourth of all, have you tried to play your burnt CD's in more then one cd palyer? maybe its just your cd palyer that is malfunctioning?
