Is it better if you have a hard drive as a master and one as a slave or one master and the other one connected to another IDE controller card with a different cable?
it's better to have hard drives in the master slot. if you want to run more than one hd, i recommend running them both in the master position. I'm not really sure why it is better.

Better to have each one to its own cable and to a different controller (IDE port) instead of as a mater/slave pair sharing the same IDE controller. Having just one drive per cable/controller will give you better performance as you don't have drives competing with each other for the same controller. A particularly good example is when setting a RAID 0 array - you want only one drive for each interface so that they can both work in parallel.

i m asking because when i got my 120gb maxtor 2 weeks ago it came with a ide controller card. I have not installed it because i set the drive up as slave. If i am goiong to get better perfomance using it for my new drive i will use it .
Master on one controller and the other drivce on the other controller
what do you think?
Does this apply to cd burners, cause I only have one hd and the cd burners and an empty slot, should I put each one with it's own cable?
