i just got a new computer going, i got a new router and a new modem. i called comcast they got the new modem going, but they cant do anything about the router. they said to shutdown both computers, unplug the router and the modem then after 10 seconds plug them back in and power up both computers, and they should get the stuff they need to connect. i did that and the other computer still doesnt get internet, and i cant figure out why...can someone help me with this. i got a motorolla surfboard 5100 modem, and linksys BEFSX41 router. the first computer gets internet from the router just fine. so can someone help me get the internet to the second computer? thanks ahead of time.

are you using the router to give out DHCP addresses? which would also contain gateway details to reach the internet. It may be that your new computer doesn't know where to look for the internet

what windows version?

what you need to do is set it up so that the new computer gets its IP addresses from DHCP

YES! thats exactly what i need. i had a friend take me through all the steps. both computers are xp. old is xp home, new is xp pro. he walked me throug the check steps. control panel>network and internet connections>network connections...he said is there Local Area Connection there? i said yes, it says LAN or High-Speed Internet. oh, he also told me to make sure the workgroups were the same name and to restart. i did that. then he said to double click that icon, i did. he said go to properties, i did, he said make sure that they are bubbled "obtain am IP address automaticly" blah blah blah. i said it alreayd did and he didnt know what to do.

when you double click the "LAN or High-Speed Internet" icon, and go to support, it says for all of the following fields "<Unavailable>":

Adress type:
IP Adress:
Subnet Mask:
Defualt Gateway:

fiji, you said "what you need to do is set it up so that the new computer gets its IP addresses from DHCP" thats what i think i need to do....cant you tell me how?

Well..making sure that they obtain an IP adress automatically means the same thing that fiji had said...it will request the IP from the router at boot time.

Can the computer w/o internet ping the router? (start>run>cmd>ping 192.168.0.1 assuming that is the router IP) the router IP would be in the manual, and it is also the same adress as the one you type in your browser to configure it.

Sorry I don't have much other information..

any lights on the router? the nic card?
is the nic actually installed with drivers on the pc?
run the connection wizard, set to connect thru lan and obtain ip automaticly
in your router make sure it is set to assign ip, I do however beleive it is as you beleive the rig not the router

Well that seems to be the biggest problem right now..is that the computer can not reach the router.

As itizme had said, check to make sure that the lights on the router light up for however many computers you have connected to it. It will also light up the number for the corresponding port in which the computers are hooked up to.

You may want to try swapping nic's...it could be a bad one or testing it in the computer you know has the working net connection.

Good luck

the fact that you get 'unavailable' for those fields means that your new PC does not currently have an IP address and will not be able to connect. Try swapping the network cables between the two computers to make sure that a cable fault is not to blame.
If that does not work take a note of those fields deatails from the pc that can connect. Ask your friend to talk you through assigning those details to the pc that can't connect. If those details work then it proves that the other PC can connect it is just struggling to use DHCP. When you get up the box on the PC that can't connect with the fields listed as 'unaavailable' is there a button marked 'Repair' Please try that and let us know if it works or what error you get. We'll get you connected:D

Since the one pc and the router are fine, we know it is an issue on the other pc- allt the rest of this post applies to that one.

First you need to ensure that the network card is working.
Check the Device Manager in Admin Tools (or whatever it's called- I'm on a Linux pc right now) in the Control Panel and make sure that the network card doesn't report a problem and IS seen by the os.
IF that is ok, go to the command prompt and type: ping 127.0.0.1
That will ping your pc using the loopback address and check that it works.

Post results and we'll move on to the next steps then. :)

ok well just because it cant ping 192.168.0.1

doesnt mean anything really

the router could be on a different internal ip address

but anyway

since you have windows xp -- when it starts up, go to start -> run -> type in "cmd" without quotes -> then type "ipconfig" without qutoes

then see if it gets an IP address other than localhost(127.0.0.1)

if you dont have that, go to

control panel -> network connections -> right click on Local Area Connection and hit properties -> then go to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and hit properties -> then make sure that the circle button Obtain IP addresss automatically , and Obtain DNS automatically is selected -> then on the other tab "alternate configuration" select automatic private ip address
